Michael McDowell Obituary

Published by Legacy on Mar. 13, 2026.
Michael Jason "Jay" McDowell, 48, of West Point, Virginia, passed away on February 24, 2026, surrounded by his loved ones.

Jay was born in Albany, Georgia, and moved to West Point, Virginia, in 2005, where he met his lifelong partner, Heather Curry. He was known for his warm spirit and the joy he brought to those around him.

Throughout his life, Jay loved grilling, gardening, camping, and racing RC cars with his son, Aiden. Known to many as "Grill Master Jay", he took great pride in cooking for family and friends and bringing people together around good food and laughter.

Jay was a dedicated crane operator at West Point Chips, where he worked faithfully for 14 years. His strong work ethic and the friendships he built there meant a great deal to him.

Jay was preceded in death by his mother, Midge Brumbelow; his nephew, Mathew Payne Taylor; his aunt, Pam King; and his grandmother, Dorothy Brumbelow.

Jay is survived by his lifelong partner, Heather Curry of West Point, Virginia; his sons, Dylan McDowell and Aiden McDowell; his father, Thomas McDowell; his brother, Matt McDowell; and his sister, Oliva James. He also leaves behind many extended family members, friends, and coworkers who became like family throughout his years at West Point Chips.

Jay's love for his family, his passion for the outdoors, and the joy he found in bringing people together will never be forgotten. Though he may be gone from our sight, his spirit will forever remain in the memories and hearts of those who loved him.

A memorial service to celebrate Jay's life will be held at a later date in West Point, Virginia. Family and friends will gather to share memories and honor the life of a man who meant so much to so many.
