Mikel Garrett Obituary

Mikel Garrett

July 7, 1960 - April 21, 2024

Wildwood, Missouri - Mikel Dayle Garrett of Wildwood, Missouri passed away unexpectedly on April 21st, 2024 at Mercy Hospital in Creve Coeur, Missouri. He was born on July 7th, 1960 at Boone Hospital in Columbia, Missouri to the late Dayle and Florance (Berner) Garrett.

Mikel earned a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture from The University of Missouri in 1984. His love for Mizzou and the Tigers carried with him for his entire life. As he liked to say, "Mizzou Football is a religion, and Faurot Field is the church." A passionate season ticket holder for many years, one of his greatest joys was tailgating and attending the games with his friends and family.

Following in his father's footsteps, Mikel enjoyed a 41 year long career with State Farm Insurance. In 1987 he started in the claims department in Kansas City, was later transferred to Pennsylvania and eventually worked in Urban Markets at the home office in Bloomington, IL. In 2001 he became an agent and opened an office in Wildwood, Missouri. His years with State Farm took him across the country and around the world. He was always eager to help anyone with insurance and financial questions and took great pride in helping his customers, many of which became friends.

Mikel had diverse interests. He was a history buff, constantly reading books on American History, collecting vintage propaganda posters, and watching "war movies" from his extensive collection. He loved his Audi TT convertible, and lived for long rides with the top down during the summer with his wife, Lisa, by his side. He loved to travel, cheer on the Chiefs, watch Star Trek, listen to Rush and go on an annual boy's trip to Texas with his friends.

A great friend, uncle, brother, father, husband and man, Mikel will be sorely missed by all who knew him. He loved endlessly and unconditionally. His smile and laugh were contagious, and he wanted nothing more for everyone to be happy and having a good time all the time. A true "Teddy Bear", Mikel lit up the room wherever he went.

Mikel is survived by his wife, Lisa (Kay) Garrett, his four sisters, Amy (Garrett) Gonzales, Jill (Garrett) Bacon, Karen (Garrett) Hiler and Sharen Garrett, his three daughters Kelsey Garrett, Molly Garrett and Brooke Bruning, and his granddog Remy.

Mikel's family and friends will be hosting a Celebration of Life on June 21st-22nd in Columbia, Missouri. Come to Booche's on Friday evening, wear your black and gold, and reach out to any family members for details on Saturday's festivities.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made in Mikel's name to the University of Missouri's College of Agriculture as well as Mizzou Athletics.

I still have a hard time processing Mikel not being physically on earth. The funny things at work made me better.

Lived across from Mike and his roommate Dale in Columbia, MO back in 1983. He was capable of lighting up a whole apartment building, not just a room. A large man with an even larger sense of humor. My condolences to his family and friends and may he rest in peace.

I´m so sorry about Mike´s unexpected and untimely passing. Such a hard time and I know your faith in Christ will sustain you.
I remember visiting him with Amy and seeing all his Mizzou memorabilia. I learned the MU fight song because he had a big blanket with all the words hanging on the wall. I proudly sing it at every game I attend and I think of him and that big blanket on the wall and how I every MU grad should know it. Love your family so much. So sorry for your loss.
