NEIL SHEA Obituary

With his daughters at his side, Dr. Neil Patrick Shea died Feb. 1, 2015. He was born in Kansas City, Kan., to O'Neil Patrick and Mary Josephine Shea. He attended Bishop Ward High School. A Jayhawk to the core, Shea graduated from the University of Kansas (BS '64, M.Ed '67, Ed.D. '77). In 1960, Shea married Betty Jean Smith at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Raytown. They were married 43 years. Shea was a deputy with the Wyandotte County sheriff and an officer in Kansas City, Kan., Mission, and Olathe. He retired as a captain. He was an educator in the Shawnee Mission school district and principal of De Soto Junior High. He was a Kansas City Chiefs Red Coater for 44 years and a charter member. He was preceded in death in by his wife on Jan. 31, 2004. He is survived by daughters, Kathleen Ann Schatte (David) of Overland Park, and Sarah E.S. Shea-Cahir (Ian) of Shawnee; grandchildren, Cameron Sizemore, Andrew Schatte, Aidan Cahir, Alida Cahir and Ginger Shea-Cahir; his cousins, Steve Peters of Shell Knob, Mo.; Daniel Shea Peters of Boston, and cousins in the St. Louis area. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, with rosary at 7:30 p.m. at McGilley & Hoge, Overland Park. Services are at 10 a.m. Friday, Cure of Ars Catholic Church, Leawood, with luncheon at church following burial at Resurrection Cemetery, Lenexa. Neil was my "break-in" officer in 1957 at the KCKPD. I went on to KCMoPD a year later and lost track of Neil. My fondest memory is his sense of humor. Neil was a friend and a delightful person to be with. May his soul rest in peace. Chaplain Fred McDaniel, Riverside PD&FD, Mo. State HP.
