Richard M. Farr

Funeral services for Richard Morris Farr will be held on Monday, January 5, 2009, at 2 p.m. at the Weng Funeral Chapel, Jasper, Mo., with visitation at 1:30 p.m. Richard passed away December 31, 2008, at Overland Park Nursing and Rehab Center following complications from surgery for a broken hip. He was born March 11, 1913, in Jasper, Mo., to Albert Ross Farr and Charlotte May Morris Farr. He was preceded in death by his wife, Grace May Huffman Farr, their only child, Sandra Farr Mallard, and his sister, Edwina Farr Martin. In March of 1943, Richard entered the U.S. Army and served his country as a NCO Supply Sergeant during WWII. He was stationed in France, Normandy, Rhineland and Central Europe, receiving four Bronze Stars for his service. Following his discharge and upon returning to the Jasper area, the family moved to Fort Scott, Kan., where Richard worked for The Borden Company. In 1961, the family moved to the Kansas City area, and Richard began working for the U.S. Postal Service as a city mail carrier, retiring in 1978. Upon retirement, Richard generously donated his time as a volunteer officer with The Senior Center Programs of Johnson County, Kan., as well as volunteer service to The University of Kansas Medical Center. Survivors include his son-in-law, Jon Mallard, Overland Park, Kan.; three nieces: Joan Burm, Olathe, Kan., Jean Holland, Galena, Kan., Mary Miller, Leawood, Kan., and nephew John Knowles, Zephyrhills, Fla. As a celebration of Richard's life, a memorial service will be held at The Overland Park Christian Church on Saturday, January 10, at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions in Richard's behalf to Overland Park Christian Church, 7600 W. 75th St., Overland Park, KS 66204, or Disabled American Veterans Chapter 2, 8787 Old Santa Fe Road, Kansas City, MO 64138.
