For those of us who had the pleasure of working with Bob, the first thing that comes to mind was his smile. The second was his way with words. He could bring gritty honesty with an eloquent word and a smirk. That was not his only trademark. While his quips always made us smile, what stays with many of us is the respect, kindness and thoughtfulness Bob brought to every interaction. There is a saying about the people you work with at FEMA becoming part of your family. When we suffer a loss of a family member, we all feel it. While many of us feel sorrow right now, it is important to celebrate our family. In celebrating Bob’s life, his achievements and his memory, we came together to plant 100 trees on State Forest Lands—If there was a historically relevant bridge we could save, we would. Honor Bob by continuing to be good stewards for the things he believed and honor his memory and his time spent with us by heeding his own advice; “Onward ever, backward never!”

"Onward ever, backwards never!"
Those words Bob often quoted and were contained in his last message to me. I will remember them as well as his sense of humor, incredible wordsmithing skills and his ever pleasant disposition.
