Virginia Wilkerson Obituary

Virginia ("Ginny") Wilkerson of Leawood, Kansas passed away on July 31, 2006 after courageously battling leukemia since March of 2005. Visitation services will be held at Church of the Nativity, at 119th & Mission Rd., in Leawood, KS on Thursday, August 3rd from 5:30-8:00 PM, with a rosary to follow. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 4th at Church of the Nativity, with burial services to follow at Resurrection Cemetery. Ginny was born on October 22, 1934 in Kansas City, MO. She attended St. Peter's Catholic Grade School and Bishop Hogan High School in Kansas City, MO, and the "Mount" in Atchison, KS. She married Patrick Wilkerson on April 18, 1959, and raised seven children here in the Kansas City area. She was a wonderful wife and a devoted mother. She found joy in attending her children's and grandchildren's activities, and cooking for our families' gatherings. She was a good and loyal friend and respected by all those who knew her. She was a woman of great faith, devoting her entire life to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and praying the rosary daily. She attended daily Mass with Pat, and was an active member of Ladies of Charity. She and Pat were Chairman of the Catholic Charities Snowball, and devoted their time and focus on this great organization. She inspired many with her amazing grace, courage and strength, as she battled leukemia and the challenges of its' ailments. What a blessing it was to know this beautiful woman. She will be missed by many. The family would like to thank their relatives and friends for their constant love, support and prayers. She was preceded in death by her son Greg Wilkerson, her mother Bernice Latz, her father Charles Latz, and her brother Bob Latz. Ginny is survived by her husband of 47 years, Pat Wilkerson, her son and daughter-in-law Bryan and Joane Wilkerson, her son and daughterin-law Kevin and Debbie Wilkerson, her daughter and son-in-law Sharon and Dan Keller, her daughter and son-in-law Michele and Pat Lillis, her son and daughter-in-law Mark and Jeannine Wilkerson, and her daughter Julie Wilkerson. She also leaves 17 grandchildren, Allison, Molly, Megan and Timmy Wilkerson; Sam, Catherine, Meg and Henry Wilkerson; Gregory, Maggie and Jeffrey Keller; Anna, Michael, Katherine and Sarah Lillis; and Emma and Ryan Wilkerson. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests that contributions be made to the Greg Wilkerson Memorial Scholarship Fund at Rockhurst High School, c/o Laurence Freeman, at 9301 State Line Rd., Kansas City, MO 64114, to Catholic Charities of Kansas City, KS, or to a charity of your choice. Ginny was such an inspiration in carrying the cross of sickness just as she was in her many years of good health. All who knew her are closer to God because of friendship with her. My prayers are with her as she goes to the home God has prepared for her and with her family in this hard time of closing a long and storied chapter of family history.

Dear Wilkerson Family, I was fortunate enough to meet Ginny many years ago through Gloria O'malley. We shared many a story from Lake Of The Ozark Day's. Through Gloria I have read your journey as a family. I have prayed for you for months and will contine to do so. I will forever hold in memory the last time I saw Ginny just before her stroke. She had that radiant smile and glow..One I think only God could bestow. She was one of the most gracious ladies I have ever known and loved her family as each of you loved her. She will be dearly missed by many. I know she smiles down on each of you from Heaven. May God Bless each of you.

Mrs. Wilkerson was a wonderful woman. How lucky I was to have witnessed her style and grace through the countless hours on the road during which she always looked perfect, her beach volleyball skills and lots of nice visits on the beach - what a sweet person! I will always remember her beautiful smile and the fact that she always had a kind word to share. The "Wilkies" are a very special family. Please know that our prayers are with you during this very difficult time.
