William Lunday Obituary

William "Bill" D. Lunday

February 13, 1936 - January 30, 2025

Lenexa, Kansas - William (Bill) D. Lunday, age 88, of Lenexa, KS, formally of Overland Park, passed away peacefully at his home on January 30, 2025, after a multi-year battle with leukemia and heart disease. Bill was born on February 13, 1936, in Kansas City, Missouri to William Dewey Lunday and Cleo (Francisco) Lunday.

Bill graduated from Southwest High School in 1954 and served honorably in the United States Army from 1957 to 1959, in France and Europe. He graduated from Baker University in 1960 with a degree in Business. During his time at Baker University, Bill was an active member of the Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity and remained involved with the alumni association post-graduation.

Bill was an Eagle Scout and a proud member of the Tribe of Mic-O-Say. After college, Bill worked as a mortgage banker at First Mortgage Company and later co-owned Tomahawk Mortgage Company and Residential Mortgage Company.

On August 28, 1964, Bill was united in marriage to his wife, Janet (Diether) Lunday. Along with his wife, Jan, he leaves his daughter Kim (Lunday) Vering and her husband Chris of Lenexa, his granddaughter Courtney (Smith) Mallory and husband Sean of Lenexa, his grandson Caleb Vering and wife Hannah of Bentonville, AR, grandson Devin Vering of Overland Park and granddaughter Jesse Vering of Lenexa. He also leaves his sister-in-law Carol Taylor of Overland Park and nephew Brett Taylor of Mission. He was pre-deceased by his parents Dewey and Cleo Lunday, his brother-in-law George Taylor and nephew Eric Taylor.

Bill, along with his wife, Jan, enjoyed traveling to their favorite places in Florida and Hawaii, along with enjoying their backyard pool and spending many fun times with family and friends. They especially enjoyed going to the movie theater, having lunch with friends, going to the casino, watching KU basketball and cheering on the Kansas City Chiefs, as Bill was a 40-year season ticket holder.

A Visitation for Bill will be held from 9:30am to 11:00am on Friday, February 7 at Mt. Moriah, Newcomer & Freeman Funeral Home, 10507 Holmes Road, Kansas City, MO. A Memorial Service will follow at 11:00am. Burial will take place in Mount Moriah Cemetery at 1:00pm. Attendees should dress casually and wear their Chief's attire, Bill's favorite team!

Dear Jan and Kim; My condolences to you and your family. I have fond memories of when our families would get together. I know my Dad, Charlie Perkins enjoyed Bill´s friendship and as a work colleague. I remember our trip to Arkansas together for our families. May all your memories give you comfort at this sad time. Love, Mary
