Edward Symons Obituary

Born: Oct. 7, 1941, in Reading, Pa.
Died: Jan. 2, 2012, in North Aurora

NORTH AURORA – Edward Walter Symons, 70, passed away Monday, Jan. 2, 2012, at his home in North Aurora, surrounded by his family. Edward was born Oct. 7, 1941, in Reading, Pa., the son of John Walter and Lillian May (Fair) Symons.

Ed attended Reading High School and – at the age of 18 – he joined the Navy in November 1959 and served till November 1963. After six months, he re-enlisted in April 1964 and served till April 1968. In 1964, he met and married Katherine Johnson while in training at Great Lakes Training School of Radar. In 1968, he became an air traffic controller/flight service working at Joliet, DuPage and Kankakee airports till his retirement in 1991. In 1992, he went to work as a part-time driver at The Holmstad in Batavia, and he worked there till December 2010. As a youngster, he was a pin setter at the local bowling alley so it wasn't surprising when he started bowling as a teenager and continued on in adulthood. Ed loved to watch sports and in his younger adult years played softball with the Batavia Park District as a pitcher. Ed also put in a beautiful garden every year, and he was very proud of all the different vegetables it produced.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Katherine A. (Johnson); one son, Michael and Amy (Smith) Symons and their children, Sydney and Dylan, of North Aurora; three daughters, Marilyn Oplinger of Shillington, Pa., and her children, Janel and Chad Smith, of Fleetwood, Pa., and Jessica Oplinger of Shillington, Pa., Beth and Rich Stocker and their children, Katelyn, Jonathan and Peter of Valparaiso, Ind., and Susan and Mark Landreth of North Aurora; four brothers, Fred (Darlene) Symons of Wyomissing, Pa., John (Vivian) Symons of Reading, Pa., Leroy (Caroline) Symons of Bishopville, S.C., and Bill (Nancy) Frymoyer Jr. of Womelsdorf, Pa.; and brother-in- law, Peter (Jill) Johnson of Mercer, Wis.; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, William Frymoyer Sr.; son-in-law, Kurt Oplinger; and brother, Louis Symons.

Funeral and burial services will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the Batavia Fire Department, 800 E. Wilson St., Batavia, IL 60510; the North Aurora Fire Department, 2 N. Monroe St., North Aurora, IL 60542; or Vitas, Innovative Hospice Care, 580 Waters Edge, Suite 100, Lombard, IL 60148.

I also worked with and for Ed way back in the 80's & 90's. When we get together and reminisce about the good old days, Eddie's name still comes up with fond memories! Godspeed, Eddie.
