Frank Johnson Obituary

Frank D. Johnson
Born: June 6, 1939 in Geneva, Ill.
Died: December 16, 2024 in DeKalb, Ill.
It is with deep sorrow that his family announces the passing of Frank D. Johnson, 85, of Sycamore, Ill., who passed away Dec. 16, 2024, in DeKalb.
Born June 6, 1939, in Geneva, Frank lived a life full of service, love, and devotion to his family and community. He was the son of Clarence C. and Gladys Eva (Gough) Johnson.
After graduating high school, Frank proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy from 1958-1962. Following his time in the Navy, he returned home and began a lifelong career with the Geneva Fire Department, where he served with distinction and dedication from 1967, rising through the ranks to lieutenant in 1970, captain in 1974, and chief in 1980, until his retirement in 1996.
The Fire Department and the community of Geneva held a special place in Frank's heart, and he was a beloved member of both. His contributions to the department and to the town shaped the lives of many and left a lasting impact.
Frank's memory will forever be cherished by all who knew him. He was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather, and a loyal servant to his community. His legacy will continue to inspire those who were fortunate enough to have known him.
He also was a Master Gardener, and enjoyed time fishing and being with his grandchildren. He was humorous and caring, always helping people when he could.
His family was his greatest pride, and his legacy of love, strength, and kindness will continue to live on through them.
Frank is survived by his loving wife, Kris; his son, Matt (wife, Emily "Kaki") Johnson; and his adored grandchildren, Caitlan Larson (partner, Christopher Dapkus) of Batavia, Drew Larson of Chicago, and Frank and Charlie Johnson of DeKalb; and great-grandchildren, Oden and Leo Larson-Martinez and Ellis Dapkus; stepson, Joel Larson of North Aurora; brother-in-law, Jim (partner, Jeannie Harkness) Benson of Surprise, Ariz.; and nieces, Lori (Tom) Hansen of Geneva, Lisa Post of Washington, D.C., and Jill Armstrong of Nokomis, Fla.
No services are planned. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the charity of the donor's choice in his honor.

When Frank started on the Geneva Fire Department in 1967 I was a 11 year old neighbor kid who hung out at the fire station. Frank became a roll model and big brother figure to me and was patient with all my questions and included me in some of his daily activities. When I was a senior in high school I was able to work 40 hours a week at the fire station through a career training program which was a dream come true. This led to becoming the second full time firefighter. Frank taught me so much and tolerated a young energetic partner anxious for action ( think Barney Fife). It was a busy 5 years for big fires and I am proud to have rolled up on most of them at Franks side. Too many memories to list here, but what a great place and person to have mold you into a adult. I worked with Frank at the City of Geneva in the late 70's/early 80's when he was fire chief. Through him, I became friends with his lovely wife Kris. He was a wonderful, charming man, and will be greatly missed. My sympathy to Kris, family, and friends.

I was lucky enough to know Frank and had a working relationship with him for a number of years. Frank was very dedicated to the community.

Frank was Chief the few years I spent on the department as a "paid on call" firefighter in the early 80s. A very positive patient man who taught me life lessons that are still with me today.
