Alvin Grams Obituary

Upland resident, 75

KEARNEY - Alvin L. "Al" Grams, 75, of Upland died Monday, Aug. 11, 2008, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Upland United Methodist Church with Ivan Schoone officiating. Burial will be at Upland Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Layton-Craig Funeral Home in Minden.

He was born Sept. 9, 1932, in Franklin County to Alexander and Susanna (Diedrich) Grams.

On July 26, 1957, he married Vonda Rudd in Upland. She died in 2006.

Survivors include his daughters, Pat Nelson and her husband, Kendall, of Holdrege, Deb Hinze and her husband, Doug, of Axtell and Donna Simon and her husband, Doug, of Omaha; brothers, Gary and his wife, Barb, of Ankeny, Iowa, and Bob and his wife, Nancy, of Hastings; sisters, Carolyn Fuelberth and her husband, Don, of Stewart and Connie Welty and her husband, Gary, of Kearney; and grandchildren, Zachary Nelson and his wife, Wendi, Joshua Nelson, Eric Hinze, Andrew Nelson, Sarah Hinze, Elizabeth Johnson and her husband, Jim, and Eliese Simon.

He grew up in the Campbell area and was baptized and confirmed at the Presbyterian Church in Campbell. He graduated from Campbell High School in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1953 to 1954 during the Korean War.

He and his family farmed and lived near Upland for many years. He was a member of Upland United Methodist Church and the Upland American Legion.

He enjoyed bowling, hunting and farming, but most of all his children and grandchildren. His family was most important to him.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his great-granddaughter, Brynn Nelson; sisters, Elaine Urbom and Thelma Wilson; and brother, Ray Grams.

Memorials are suggested to the Nebraska Boys Home in Omaha or the United Methodist Church in Upland.

I was so sorry to hear about your dad. I really got to know him after your mother passed away and when he came to the Omaha Home for Boys on his visits to Omaha. I will miss him at the family reunions.
