A funeral service for Barbara A. Vosburg will be held on Thursday, January 23, 2025, at 10:30 a.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege, Nebraska with Pastor Sarah Fisher officiating. Interment will follow at the Prairie Home Cemetery in Holdrege.
Barbara Ann Vosburg, 94 years of age, of Holdrege, passed away on Wednesday, January 15, 2025, at the Phelps Memorial Health Center in Holdrege. Barbara was born June 14, 1930, in Oxford, Nebraska, the eldest of two daughters born to Lawrence and Ferne (Winkler) Rankin. She grew up on a farm northwest of Oxford and attended a one-room rural school, walking or riding her bicycle the one-and-one-half miles. Later, she attended Oxford Public Schools, graduating with the class of 1947, where she was Class Secretary. Following graduation, she attended Business School in Lincoln and was then employed at Missouri Valley Construction and later, Kansas Nebraska Gas Company in Oxford.
On November 24, 1952, she was united in marriage to Charles "Charley" Vosburg. The couple made their home in Cedar Rapids until Charles entered the Sea Bees in the United States Navy. While in the service, they lived in California and Rhode Island. When living in Rhode Island, Barbara worked for the Providence Gas Company. After his discharge, they moved to Holdrege where they began their family; three children: Becky, Scott, and Kurt, and lived out the rest of their lives.
Barbara's children, and grandson, Ian, were always her source of pride. Barbara was a "stay-at-home mom" until she began working at the Phelps County Senior Center from 1989 until 2004. She was instrumental in establishing the Respite Care Program in the Holdrege Area.
Barbara devoted much of her life to advocating for the needs of the developmentally disabled. She was instrumental in the establishment of an adult program for developmentally disabled persons in Holdrege, an active supporter of the Special Olympics, giving of her time and financial support, and was a founding member of the South Central Association of Retarded Citizens. She volunteered faithfully at the Corner Nugget and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Barbara was a delegate to the Nebraska White House Conference on Handicap Individuals. She served many years on the board of the ARC and also on ARC state committees.
Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charley Vosburg; her sister, Lila Rankin; and many brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law.
Barbara leaves to celebrate her life; her daughter, Becky Vosburg of Holdrege; two sons: Scott Vosburg and his wife, Euna of Holdrege; and Kurt Vosburg and his wife, Rebecca of McCook, Nebraska; one grandson, Ian Vosburg and his wife, Kaitlin of Lincoln, Nebraska; two great-granddaughters, Kenley and Madi Vosburg; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, January 22, 2025, from 5:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. with the family greeting from 6:00 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. at the Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.
