Charles is survived by his wife of 42 years, Julie (Baker); sons, David Hervert (Penny Young) and Daniel (Kristie) Hervert; daughter, Meghan (Nathan) Leon; grandchildren, Jessica (Matthew) John, Becky (Dominic) Smedra, Nathanael Fread, Sarah Hervert, Jenifer (Matt) Lentz, Jessica (Jeff) Erpelding, Joseph Hervert, Elizabeth Hervert, James Leon, Marion Leon, Ava Leon; great grandchildren, Abian John, Grace Smedra, Leo Smedra, Graham Duester, Stella Lentz, Iris Lentz, Olive Lentz, Ava Erpelding, Georgia Erpelding; brothers, sisters and many other loving extended family members.
Chuck's life was marked by 45 treasured years in education. He loved his time spent coaching many sports, but especially enjoyed coaching track. Highlighted by coaching the 1969 winning Nebraska State Boys Class "C" Track Championship team from Wauneta.
He began his career in education in August of 1962, teaching, in many Central Nebraska schools throughout the years. In 1989, he spent time as a substitute teacher while working on and completing his advanced degrees in Educational Administration at UNK. He then went onto act as Principal at Wauneta Public Schools and Cozad City Schools. In 1999, he began his final administrative position at Maxwell Public Schools as the Superintendent, Elementary Principal, and Title 1 Director.
He retired in 2011 and relocated with his wife to the San Diego area in 2012. During retirement, Chuck enjoyed deep sea fishing, participating in the Republican Club and volunteering at their Catholic parish. After making a final move back to Nebraska in 2017, Chuck's health began to further decline and during his last years, he enjoyed quiet time at home, watching sports and spending time with family.
Chuck touched many lives. No matter where he went in the state, he always ran into someone he taught, coached, worked with, or knew as a parent of a student, who stopped to tell him how much they appreciated his presence in their lives. He looked forward to his yearly trips to Canada, his eyes ever fixed on catching the next biggest walleye.
He was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather, grounded in his Catholic Faith that began in his childhood as an altar boy.
Although he was a man of few words, his kindness and authenticity always shined through when he shared things with those he loved and respected. He will be missed by many.
