Eugene Slocum

Litchfield resident, 92

LINCOLN - Eugene Slocum, 92, of Litchfield died Friday, May 31, 2013, at his daughter's home in Lincoln.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at Litchfield Christian Church with the Rev. Joel Plisek officiating. Burial will be at Litchfield Cemetery.

Rasmussen Funeral Home in Ravenna is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Dec. 23, 1920, near Arcadia to George and Etta May (Sinclair) Slocum.

On Sept. 8, 1943, he married Dolores Owens.

Survivors include his wife; son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Sue Slocum of Litchfield; daughters and sons-in-law, Faye and Robert Wellman of Litchfield and Tracy Slocum Farritor and Shane Farritor of Lincoln; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

He was educated in Sherman County. He and Dolores were married for 69 years.

Gene served during World War II in India and China as a military policeman. While in India he flew over the Himalayan Mountains in military transport aircraft to help resupply the U.S. Army Air Forces based in China. Later, after the liberation of Shanghai, he was based in that city to provide civil police protection.

After the war Gene and Dolores made their home in Minnesota where he worked in several occupations. In the early 1970s Gene moved his family back to Nebraska and they made their home in Litchfield. They owned and operated the gas station on Highway 2 for several years. He continued to work in various jobs most recently at Trotter Fertilizer. He retired when he was in his 80s.

He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; sister, Vida Brown; and brothers, Ralph Slocum, Cecil Slocum, Alvin Slocum, Jake Slocum and Clarence Slocum.

Memorials are suggested to Litchfield United Methodist Church.
