Howie lived life to the fullest and was always somebody good to talk to when I was down and out. He may of had his own demons to deal with but, he was always upbeat and optimistic. He was accepting of anyone and could make anybody laugh. I wish I could go back in time and work one more night at the 18th Amendment with him and everyone else that was there. Those were good times and great memories that I will always cherish. There are people whom I can't wait to see when my time comes and Howie is one of them. The first thing I want to hear is SHOTS!!!!!!!!!!!

I remember Howie as one of the really popular people in High School, but he never acted like it, he was everyone's friend and it is obvious that carried on throughout his life.
I went into the Fedora Lounge tonight and had a drink in Howie's memory. I only wish I'd gotten to see him behind the bar instead of his picture.
Jerry and Andy, my thoughts and prayers are with you.

Words cannot express the sorrow we feel for your and our precious loss. We were fortunate to meet Howie once. Full of life and vigor. Howie Thanked me for giving him life and told me, if I never seen him again, not to worry about him because he was always taken good care of. Our miss is a deep-one and always will be. Our Prayers for Peace and Blessings to all Howie's families and friends. With All our Love,

I am so sorry to hear of Howie's passing. We met in High School, even though we attended Holdrege High, we formed a wonderful friendship with Howie. He would come to Holdrege and hang out with all of us.
When I hear his name I always think of that beaming smile on his face.
When his mother passed away a few years ago he started visiting Holdrege pretty regularly and we were able to spend more time with Howie again during that time. I am so thankful for that and all the wonderful conversations we caught up on.
Later we took a big group to Omaha and visited him at Fedora's. What a fond memory. I don't know how many people Howie introduced us to that trip... but it's one I won't forget.
Rest in peace my friend.
We all love and miss you.

I’m so very sorry for your loss. I haven’t seen Howie since we were about 19 years old, but I grew up in Holdrege and used to spend time with him and Mike Wiser, cruising 4th Avenue, going to street dances, just wasting time having fun... I don’t think I ever saw Howie mad and his smile could light up the night. He was a perfect example of someone who never let his popularity, looks and athletic abilities go to his head. He was a sweetheart to everyone, and I especially remember how I always appreciated his kindness and friendship. He always seemed to make me feel valued and normal at a time in my life when my teenage self felt anything but! I have told several people that the weekend he passed away, for some reason I thought of him and wondered where he was, even though I hadn’t talked to him in all those years. Funny how life works that way – I found out several days later that he had passed away. I live in Chicago now and I just happen to be going to a Cubs game this Friday, October 2nd. Now that I know that Howie was an avid Cubs fan, I’ll be thinking of him at the game and I’ll say a little prayer for him during the 7th inning stretch! Even though we lost touch over the years, your absence is felt and you will be missed.

I bet Mari couldn't wait to jump into Howie's arms last Sunday morning. She always looked at her big brother with such love and admiration. I remember Howie as the "super-star" of the high school- how a little kid perceives the most popular, well-liked guy!
Our prayers and thoughts are with you Jerry, Andy and family in another time of sorrow for your family.

I have many cherished memories of the time spent teaching and living in the Wilcox area. Howie is part of those memories as all of you are. I moved away some time ago but continue to keep in touch with a few. I began reading all of the wonderful and heartfelt entries. It is hard to read through the tears(some of laughter) while reading all of the wonderful memories he has left with so many people. He is not gone. He will continue to live on in the hearts and memories of those that knew him. God knew what he was doing when he blessed us all with knowing Howie. My prayers are with his family and friends. Jerry, I know that his family on the other side is greating him with open arms.
September 27, 2009
From the time we moved in next to the Elliott family, we knew Howie was going to be special. My memories of Howie growing up, playing with my kids, flood into my mind's eye. Dorothy and all of the kids she babysat with went trick or treating....and guess what Howie went as?! I was the EMT who picked him up on the football field when he broke his wrists. He looked up and said "Well, that's the end of my excitement tonight". Little did he know that we would hit a deer on the road with the ambulance on our way to the hospital. Jerry and I went flying in the back of the unit, and Howie, who was strapped onto the cot said"Wow, what a ride!" He made us laugh in a situation gone from bad to worse. We were so proud of him at the 8 Man all star game, as if he was one of ours. My heart is broken at your loss, but I know Mari is jumping and bouncing, shouting at his arrival in Heaven. We see the ship leave and we say "there he goes". On the other side they yell "Here he comes".. that is dying. You are so very loved and missed by us all.

A week ago today Howie was taken from us too soon. One of the nicest, most genuine people we will ever know. Howie, I will miss you. Visiting Omaha will never be the same. For the past 20 years every time you'd see me, you'd act like Curly from the 3 Stooges and say "Hey Mo!" Howie, I will never forget you or your friendship. Thanks for the memories friend.

I met Howie during college when he'd come to Lincoln to visit. We got to be good friends and had some great times in Kearney too. Soon after I'd moved to Omaha, I discovered he had as well, and we'd always have fun reminiscing about the good times we'd had in college when we ran into each other. He was always respectful, kind, and fun to be around. His smile was contagious! My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and dear friends as they mourn his loss. Howie was a great person & I'm sure all who knew him felt honored to have him in their lives.

I cannot remember exactly when we met, but from that day forward you were a face I would look for in a crowd. From Kearney to Lincoln to Omaha I always knew I had a friend in you. To Howie's family, my thoughts and prayers are with you...you were truly blessed to have such an amazing person in your life as were each of the people he met. The smile and the genuine interest he gave to everyone he knew separated him from the rest. There are a million wonderful words to describe Howie but in short he was charismatic, sincere, hilarious and true. You will be missed forever.

Even knowing Howie casually as a patron, it was obvious to see what a genuinely warm person he was. Always kind, thoughtful and bringing joy to everyone he touched. I am so sorry, especially for his family and close friends, to hear he was taken from this life so soon, but I am also confident he is living his forever life in Heaven. And no doubt fulfilling some special purpose that God has for him. My prayers for God's comfort and peace go out to Howie's family and friends.

I've know Howie for close to 20 years. I worked with him in Kearney and in Omaha at Paddy Murphy's and the 18th Amendment....what a blast that was!
He always had a funny story to tell, his smile lit up a room, and he was one of the most genuine people I've ever met. I truly feel blessed to have been a part of his life, and the wonderful memories I have of him will live on forever. You are a legend Howie, and you will be greatly missed. Jerry and Andy, I am so sorry for your loss. I hate that I lost touch with him. I found a picture of the two of us when we were about 6 months old. I'll never forget all the fun times we had when Dorothy babysat me. One of my favorites was when we climbed the tree in your yard and wouldn't come down. Dorothy had to climb up and get us. To say we were mischieveous is an understatement. I read Melissa's note and I also remeber the shaving of the eyebrows, warm smile, and his big heart. You're in my thoughts and prayers. He will be missed.

Howie, you were a charmer, a believer, and easily the most genuinely caring person I have ever met. Always a smile, never short a story or a joke. “We’re family”…that’s what you’d say, why? Because it was true. You have no idea the impact you have had on me and of the people that were so lucky to know you. I will carry with me your words of wisdom, advice, and stories we shared so many times after closing fedora. Thank you for teaching me what is important in life… “Relationships”…and you were the best at building them. You will be missed and I will miss you.

Greg & I are very sorry for the loss of your beloved, Howie. Our son, Drew Hanson, worked at Fadora until he died in April 2009. Drew always enjoyed bartending and door patrol but best of all working the after work shift. Drew loved talking with Howie and his friends, discussing business, (Drew was a UNO student of business) politics, and sports mostly. Knowing how Drew could remember stats of players that most of us don't even recognize; I'm sure they had some most interesting conversations. Greg and I never had the opportunity to meet Howie but always knew he was a caring and inspirational person. I wanted to stop by the bar to meet Howie and thank him for being a part of Drew's life; now Howie and Drew can keep each other company in heaven. May your wonderful memories of Howie keep you,

To Mr. Elliott and Andy and family,
I was fortunate enough to work with Howie for several years, and from day one, he made me feel comfortable, and truly became my friend. There are so many entries on here about how great a son/brother/co-worker/man/peron he was, and that speaks volumes about his family as well. He was one of a kind. When I met and first started dating my wife, one of the first places we went was Murphy's, so I could introduce her to Howie. Just like with me, I introduced them, he knew her name from then on, and he became our friend, instead of just mine. I am proud to say I knew Howie, blessed for the opportunity to be his friend, and will never forget him. My families thoughts and prayers are with you and yours. Howie, I will miss you brother, thanks for all the great memories, and I know we will meet again some day. God Bless You, and Rest in Peace my friend. Who Loves Ya?

After a long day of remembering and celebrating Howie's life, our 4 year old son said to me tonight as I was putting him to bed - "How is daddy's friend Howie? He had spiky hair. I want to play golf with him sometime." I asked if anyone had mentioned Howie to him lately and he said no - that he just thought of him.
As I sat there stunned, I belive now more than ever that Howie's spirit is living on in all of us - and obviously through our son tonight.
Howie was such an amazing friend who made everyone who came across his path feel special. We treasure the time we shared with him and will always remember his smile and how he could light up any room he walked into. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family.
We love and miss you Howie...

Andy and Jerry, My heart goes out to you – You’re in our thoughts and prayers. I remember Howie as a skilled artist and talented athlete but most of all as a selfless friend. I once spent the night with you (Andy & Howie) in Omaha…I intended to sleep on the couch, but Howie would have none of it – his words “A guest doesn’t sleep on the couch, you take my bed, I’m sleeping on the couch”. May rest and peace be with him in the everlasting life to come, and may the Spirit of God also give your family peace as you grieve his passing.

Dear Elliot Family,
Our thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time.
Over the past 10 years Howie has been family, friend, and mentor. Although I now regret never telling him, he was the one I tried to emulate both professionally and personally. His kindness and positive attitude never swayed. His ability to remember your name after only a brief introduction was no gimmick, but a sign of genuine interest and respect for everyone he met.
Howie cared deeply for my family, and told me so every time we were together. Just a few weeks ago he offered his baseball glove to my son Brayden. It wasn't because he didn't want it anymore, or need it anymore; it was because Howie was a giver, not a taker. I only wish he wasn't taken from us so soon.

Jerry,
Howie was a special guy to so many people as you can see from all his friends writings. He touched so many lives wherever he went. I want to thank you (and Dorothy) for raising such an outstanding man. Howie dealt with tragedies in his life with unexpected losses of his mother and sister. As much as those losses hurt him it made him into the caring and gentle soul he was and never broke his spirit of making people happy and the everlasting smile on his face that spread throughout the room. I met Howie when I was a pimply 17 year old freshman at Kearney and our friendship maintained throughout. Howie met people with open arms back then at age 17 and remained the same. My fondest memories of Howie are not the late nights at the bars (even though they were fun) but the one on one talks with him when he told stories of his family, his friends his accomplishments and his adventures. Howie lived the city boy life of Omaha but he never lost his small town values or forgot his roots. Those values you and your family taught him was what made us all love him so much. Howie was a true friend to so many people. Thank you again. I miss him.

What a sad and tragic time for our whole community. Everybody knew and loved Howie. We met Howie at the old Paddy Murphy's many years ago and have such fond and fun memories of the years past. Howie had a remarkable ability to remember every person's name and to make everybody feel special no matter who they were. While he is gone far too young, he lived and was loved far more than most people will ever get to. Rest in peace dear Howie. We are all forever grateful and blessed to have known you!

Howie was truly a fun loving guy that always kept a smile on his face. No matter where or when you saw him, he had a grin from ear to ear and I know that so many people that he knew really appreciated that. Omaha will never forget you big guy. We'll miss you.

Jerry and Andy,
My heart goes out in the deepest sympathy. Howie was a brother and a friend to me. Most importantly he was an inspiration to me in many ways. It was his genuine heart that made me marvel why SO many loved him so. I will always miss and think of him every time I step behind my bar to serve a customer! 'Much Love Brother' WHO LOVES YA!

To Howie's Family & Friends,
I wasn't great friends with Howie, but we knew each other from playing baseball against each other and occasionally hanging out at UNK. That said, Howie had a postively infectious personality, a strong competitive drive, and outstanding sportsmanship. Thank you Howie for letting me be a part of your life.

To the Elliott Family and Friends,
Few people leave the world a better place than they found it like Howie did. Always a smile, always making friends, and always being there for those he cared about. I will never forget the trip to see U2, riding in the back of the van with Howie. I will always smile when I think of Howie, and I wish everyone knew how many people he touched. Goodbye buddy...Who Loves Ya?
My prayers are with all of his family and friends.

I can see his beautiful eyes lift up just as he notices I am walking his way. His smile was infectious and laughter warm. It is this memory I hold onto until the day we meet again. We are fortunate to have called him a friend and blessed to have him as an angel awaiting our return. He will welcome us all into the gates of heaven just as he did here, with open and loving arms. I will forever remember my Sweet Pea.

Howie was the greatest. I'll never forget one night i went to Paddy Murphy's and it was slow and he got off early and joined me and a friend of mine and insisted he buy all of our drinks , he lauged when he spent all the tips he had made for the night and i said do you want some money man? He replied" It's only money i had a blast sitting here with you guys" That's what kind of guy he was and i will always remember him for his great sense of humor, and i can't wait to see him again one day up in heaven and maybe then i can return the favor.

Very few people have the ability and the compassion to make everyone around them feel special. Howie had that special gift, a gift that will be missed very much. His love did not go unnoticed, and definately will never be forgotten by all the lives he has touched. I will always remember.

Mr. Elliot & Andy,
Words can not express the hole in our hearts. Not only was Howie the best friend to Todd & I for 20 years plus, he as also Todd's business partner, but more importantly he was considered part of our family. He loved our boys and our boys loved him! He was the first to volunteer if we need a last minute "sitter" which really meant Howie had two little buddies to take to the movies and spoil with candy and games afterwords. More than once he would call and tell us to stay out longer because they were going to catch a second movie. We love him and always will! Our deepest sympathy to you and your families. He will live in our hearts forever. We are better people for having know him.

I woke up this morning (mourning) looked at my TV and a band called Howie Day was playing... Was that your little way of saying "Who Loves Ya" I have so many memories of our friendship, I still remember how excited I was when I heard you were going to be Steph and my nextdoor neighbor with Taylor... God those were some good times.. My soul misses you, my heart misses you, I miss you... See you on the other side... Hope you're waiting for me with shots of Black Haus and that intoxicating smile... Who Loves Ya? I DO! Mel
