Holdrege resident, 84

HOLDREGE - James Owen "Jim" Jones, 84, of Holdrege died Friday, June 14, 2013, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney.

Celebration of life will be at 2:30 p.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Holdrege with the Rev. Dr. W. Kirwin Stewart Jr., officiating. Private family burial will be at Minden Cemetery before services with military honors by the Minden American Legion Post 94 in conjunction with the U.S. Air Force Military Honors Team.

He was born May 1, 1929, in Minden to Harold and Maude (Crabtree) Jones.

Memorial book signing will be 4-8 p.m. today with the family present from 6-7:30 p.m. at Nelson-Bauer Funeral Home in Holdrege.

On Dec. 27, 1950, he married Maxine L. Shannon in Minden.

Survivors include his wife of Holdrege; sons: Michael Jones of Holdrege, Dan Jones and his wife, Mary Jo, of Holdrege; and Steve Jones and his wife, Sherry, of Grand Island; grandchildren, Jeremy Jones and his wife, Jody, Josh Jones and his wife, Tori, Sara Hammond and her husband, Arik, Amy Peterson and her husband, Chris, Paul Svoboda and his wife, Theresa, Susie Jones, Kip Jones and Chelsea Schweizer and her husband, Kiel; 12 great-grandchildren; sister, LuEllen Jones of Holdrege; sister-in-law, Eleanor Deisley of Gibbon; brothers-in-law: Wesley Shannon and his wife, Marcia, of Minden and Kenneth Maxon of Washington State; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

He was baptized and confirmed at the Christian Church in Minden. Jim received his education from Minden Public Schools and graduated from Minden High School with the class of 1949. Following his education, he was inducted into the Air Force on Sept. 26, 1950, and served with the 3380th Air Police Squadron until his honorable discharge on Nov. 5, 1953, as a staff sergeant.

Following his service to his country, Jim continued a career with Southern Public Power District in Grand Island, Minden and later Holdrege as a lineman and later became involved with management until his retirement in 1991

Following his retirement, Jim enjoyed his time with family, golfing with friends, traveling and, especially, wintering in Pharr, Texas.

He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege, where he served as an elder and choir director for several years; was a member of the Holdrege Country Club; and was a past member of the Elks Lodge.

Jim was preceded in death by his parents; son, Mark in infancy; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Hubert and Anna Shannon; great-grandson, Jace Ryan Jones; sisters: Eula Dunlap and her husband, Earl, and Catherine Maxon; brother, Willis Jones and his wife, Marian; and brother-in-law, Marvin Deisley.

Memorials are suggested to the First Presbyterian Church of Holdrege, Feed My Starving Children or the donor's choice.
