Kearney resident, 57

KEARNEY - Johnny R. "John" Johnson, 57, of Kearney died Saturday, Sept. 11, 2010, at Good Samaritan Hospital.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Gary Main officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery.

There will be no visitation. O'Brien-Straatmann Funeral Home of Kearney is in charge of arrangements.

He was born Nov. 20, 1952, in Hastings to Roger and Phyllis (Burkhead) Johnson.

On June 6, 1971, he married Tobie Speak in Kearney.

Survivors include his wife; sons, Kevin Johnson and his wife, Andrea, of Wood River and Kirk Johnson of Rogers, Ark.; daughter, Karlie Hermsen and her husband, Dan, of Papillion; mother, Phyllis Neemann and stepfather Merlin Neemann of Gibbon; granddaughters, Neleigh, Paige and Olivia Hermsen and Allie and Kaitlyn Johnson; brothers, Craig Johnson of Kearney and Brent Johnson of San Antonio; and sister, Sonda McClellan of Brady.

He grew up in Kearney and graduated from Kearney High School in 1971. He and Tobie lived in Kearney, where he worked as a homebuilder. He also sold real estate and worked for the Omaha World-Herald. He was also manager of building materials at Menards.

He was a member of First United Methodist Church and was past president and board member of the West Central Nebraska Homebuilders Association. He loved to hunt and fish and work in his vegetable and flower gardens. He also loved spending time with friends and family, especially his granddaughters.

He was preceded in death by his father.

Memorials are suggested to the church's prayer garden and tree fund.
