Kay Eckwert Obituary

KEARNEY - Kay Eckwert, 86, of Kearney died Friday, May 7, 2021, at St. John's Good Samaritan Society in Kearney.
A celebration of life will be at a later date.
Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Services in Kearney is in charge of arrangements.
Kay was born Sept. 13, 1934, in Falls City to Alan and Ermel (Parrack) Kirk. She graduated from Falls City High School in 1952. She then graduated from the University of Nebraska at Omaha in 1956.
On Aug. 19, 1956, Kay married Bob Eckwert in Omaha.
Kay taught fifth grade in Pleasanton when they first moved to Kearney. She also worked at Emerson Elementary in Kearney and helped many families while at Family Planning and Head Start. Kay was instrumental in developing some of the first tumbling classes in Kearney. She loved art, dancing, dressing to the max and accessories galore. She was such a fun, free spirit. Her talent for decorating and entertaining was a class act. Kay enjoyed every minute of her travel with Bob on Elks trips. She loved her husband, Bob, her family and especially her grandkids. Being beside her daughters helping to raise the next generation was a joy for her. Her love for gardening, playing cards, nature, throwing a great party and loving the holiday traditions is being carried on by her family. She would be proud!
Survivors include her daughters, Becky and Paul O'Connell of Kearney and Jennifer and Curt Nelson of Albuquerque, New Mexico; grandchildren, Kylie and Cory Sleeth of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Kara and Ben Porter of Highlands Ranch, Colorado, Kirk O'Connell of Denver, Karlie O'Connell of Kearney, Alexis Nelson of Albuquerque and Andrew Nelson of Albuquerque; great-grandchildren, Beckham and Blakely Sleeth, Nora and Mason Porter; brother, Alan and Marti Kirk of Buffalo, New York; and her sister-in-law, Norma Eckwert of Falls City.
Kay was preceded in death by her husband Bob Eckwert; and mother and father.
Memorials are suggested to Head Start, MONA or the Peterson Senior Center in Kearney.
