Kearney resident, 96

KEARNEY - Lawrence W. Fritz, 96, of Kearney died Wednesday, May 18, 2011, at St. John's Good Samaritan Center in Kearney.
Services will be at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Zion Lutheran Church with the Rev. Donald Becker officiating. Burial will be at Kearney Cemetery with military honors by American Legion Post 52, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759 and the Nebraska National Guard Military Honors Team.

Visitation will be one hour before services Saturday at the church.

Horner Lieske McBride & Kuhl Funeral and Cremation Service in Kearney are in charge of arrangements.

He was born Jan. 20, 1915, in Wilcox to Charles and Dora (Volk) Fritz.

On Dec. 30, 1942, he married Velma Tjaden in Brownwood, Texas. She died Sept. 21, 1998.

Survivors include his daughters, Linda Johnson and her husband, Herb, and Lynette Johnson and her husband, Dale, all of Kearney, and Leanna Fritz and her special friend, Scott Gavin, of Omaha; sister, Alvera Lieske of Kearney; and five grandchildren.

His family moved to Upland where Lawrence attended school and was a graduate of Upland High School in 1933. He attended Midway College in Minneapolis before entering the service on April 17, 1942. He served overseas in the U.S. Army as a radioman until he was discharged on Oct. 13, 1945.

While Lawrence was overseas, Velma taught at Alfalfa Center District 46 from 1943 to 1944. Following his discharge from the military, they lived in Upland until moving to Kearney in 1954. Lawrence attended the Kansas City School of Television and Radio and was employed at the Sears Department Store in Kearney as a radio, television and appliance repairman for more than 20 years until he retired in September 1978.

He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church, Lutheran Laymen's League and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 759. He served on various church committees and ran the radio broadcast booth at Zion for several years.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by one sister and one brother.

Memorials are suggested to Zion Lutheran Church.
