Rev. Thomas E. Mullowney, 96, of Kearney, died Saturday, June 29, 2024 at Mount Carmel Home Keens Memorial in Kearney. Funeral Mass and Burial will be 10:30 am, July 3, 2024 at St. James Catholic Church with Bishop Joseph G. Hanefeldt presiding and priests of the Diocese of Grand Island concelebrating. Burial will follow the service at the Kearney Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 pm at St. James Catholic Church with a wake service at 7:00 pm. Memorials are suggested to Kearney Catholic High School Foundation or Mt. Carmel Home Keens Memorial. Fr. Tom was born December 1, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska to Vance and Mary (Lustig) Mullowney. He grew up in Omaha attending Omaha Holy Name, St. Bernards, and Benson grade schools until moving to Kearney at the age of 9. He attended St. James School in Kearney, then for the next 12 years, Pontifical College and Josephinum Seminary in Columbus, OH. Fr. Tom was ordained a Catholic Priest at the Seminary May 30, 1953. He served 1 year as Associate at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grand Island, 4 months at St. Michael's in Spalding, NE, 3 ½ years at St. Patrick's in Sidney. He then was Pastor at Church of the Visitation at O'Connor, NE for 7 years and taught at Sacred Heart School in Greeley. Then he was appointed Superintendent of St. Patrick's Schools in North Platte and Chaplain at St. Mary's Hospital for 6 years. Then Pastor at St. Peter and Paul in St. Paul, NE for 1 year, St. Ann's in Lexington for 2 years, Blessed Sacrament in Grand Island for 7 years, Christ The King in Cozad and Our Lady of Good Counsel in Gothenburg for 7 years, St. Luke's Catholic Church in Ogallala for 6 years, and Sacred Heart in Shelton for 2 years before retiring and moving to Kearney. Following retirement, he assisted with services in Grand Island Diocese and at Mt. Carmel Home for many years. Fr. Mullowney was also the Diocesan Spiritual Director for the Cursillo Movement for 25 years.
Fr. Mullowney loved his life as a priest and for the Church and God. He enjoyed his fellowship with family and many other priests, clergy, and parishioners..
Fr. Tom is survived by several nieces and nephews.
Fr. Tom was preceded in death by his brothers, James, Robert, and M. Paul Mullowney, and sister, JoAnne Nickel.
