Wayne A. Deterding

Wayne A. Deterding, 87 of Kearney passed away Sunday, January 11, 2026, at CHI Good Samaritan Hospital in Kearney. A graveside service will be 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2026, at Kearney Cemetery. Military honors will be provided by the U.S. Navy Funeral Honors Team.

Wayne was born June 16, 1938, in Adams County, NE to George and Erma (Plambeck) Deterding. He grew up on the family farm in rural Adams County. Wayne attended Wanda Zion Lutheran Parochial School and Holstein High School. Wayne served in the U.S. Navy receiving a honorable medical discharge in 1958. He worked on the family dairy until he went to work for Speltz Swanson-John Deere for several years. Later he was a truck driver for Kearney Crete and Block. After retirement, he kept busy taking on a few part-time trucking jobs.
Wayne had a passion for classic cars and collecting toy tractors. He loved attending auctions and playing pitch with friends.
Wayne was united in marriage to Karen Norman in 1962 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Holdrege. Wayne was a member of First Lutheran in Kearney since 1972 where he was an usher and a bus driver. He was also a member of the Eagle's Club from 1972-2015.
Left to cherish his memory are his wife Karen Deterding of Kearney; sons, Scott Deterding of Hastings, and Darren (Sonda) Deterding of Kearney; grandchildren, Kelsey (Matt) Dobish of Kearney, Courtney (Bruce) Klesath of Kearney, Kayla Erquiga of Cedarville, CA, McKenzie Deterding of Kearney, and Nicole Deterding of Kearney; great grandchildren, Lane, Beau, Kash, Keller, Deegan, Jett, Maisley, and Billie Kay; sister, Barbara Frazier of Lincoln; brother-in-law, Paul Dorn of Minden; sisters-in-laws, Peggy Ingold of Wyoming, and Marilyn (Hoss) Dannehl of Kearney; as well as several nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Patricia Dorn; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Thurston and Leaf Norman; sisters-in-law, Ruth (Grover) Waters, Dorothy (Gary) Nelson; and brothers-in-law, Robert Frazier, Floyd Ingold, and Don (Marilyn) Norman.
