Karl Terrence Deterding

Karl Terrence Deterding, a devoted family physician and beloved family man, passed away peacefully on August 8, 2025, in Prescott, AZ at the age of 89. Born on November 24, 1935, in Alton, IL, Karl's legacy is one marked by dedication to both his profession and the loved ones he cherished.

Karl's journey in medicine began after graduating from Alton High School in 1954, followed by studies at Blackburn College from 1954 to 1958, and culminating in his graduation from the University of Illinois School of Medicine from 1958 to 1962. His commitment to serving his country as a flight surgeon at Hill Air Force Base in Utah from 1962 to 1964 further exemplified his dedication to helping others.

In 1965, he opened a family medicine practice in Pontiac, IL, and four years later, he became a charter fellow at the American Academy of Family Medicine. His years of service included significant contributions to a family medicine practice in Durango, CO, and Ignacio, CO, where he worked from 1986 to 2000. Throughout his career, Karl’s compassion and expertise touched countless lives, earning him the respect and admiration of patients and colleagues alike.

On August 26, 1961, Karl married Carole Householder, and together they built a life filled with love and adventure. He was a devoted father to his three children: Karin Fetter (Vince Dalke) of Prescott, AZ, Lisa Channon (John) of Dellwood, MN, and Matt Diano (Emily) of Wheat Ridge, CO. In addition to his children, he was a proud grandfather to six grandchildren and a great-grandfather to three great-grandchildren, all of whom brought immense joy to his life.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Karl had a rich personal life that included a love for acrylic painting and biking across Europe, experiences that reflected his adventurous spirit and appreciation for the arts. He will be remembered not only for his medical expertise but also for his generous character and the warmth he brought to his family and community.

Karl Deterding's passing leaves a significant void in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. His legacy of service, love, and creativity will continue to inspire all who were fortunate enough to cross his path.
