Ellen Hymans

Ellen Ilene Hymans, age 85, of rural Dell Rapids, passed away on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at home at the age of 85. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM Saturday, November 16, 2024, at the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church. Interment will be in the Dell Rapids Cemetery. Visitation will be from 5-7:00 PM Friday, at the Minnehaha Funeral Home, Dell Rapids. Memorials to Dell Rapids United Methodist Church or Dell Rapids Cemetery. 

Ellen Ilene Johnson Hymans was born on August 25, 1939, in Dell Rapids, South Dakota to Verlin and Rae Maxine (Orcutt) Johnson. She grew up on a farm near Egan, South Dakota. Went to Shady Lawns country school for a couple years before attending and graduating from Egan Public school in 1957. She met Jim Hymans after they were set up on a blind date. They were married on May 2, 1960, at the First Reformed Church in Colton. They lived north of Buffalo Trading Post for one year until moving to the Odd Fellows Home in Dell Rapids where Jim ran the farm. In December of 1972 they moved to their home east of Dell Rapids. Ellen worked at Madison Court House before getting married. After getting married she worked part time several years at the Dutch Inn and Stones Mink Ranch, then retiring after 32 years with Dell Rapids High School food service.

She was a past member of Extension Club. She was a member of the Dell Rapids United Methodist Church, had been a Sunday School teacher and an active member with the woman’s group. She cherished time with family and her cats.

Survivors include children: Deb (Tim) Diede, Yankton, SD; Scott (Rena) Hymans, Whitewood, SD; Jamie Benz, Eagan, MN; Tammy (Larry) Jensen, Union Center, SD; 13 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren; siblings: Harvey (Brenda) Johnson, Egan, SD and Jeri (Scott) Daniels, Madison, SD; and many other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and sisters, Verla Schut and Barbara Hymans.
