All passing are sad. However, some are more personal than others.

Pawel was my closest friend growing up. Our back yards abutted. There was about a ten foot section of fence that connected the yards. A slight hop and you were over. Visiting the Andreevs was always a pleasure. Mom followed a Kalmyk custom that visitors should always be fed. If nothing else (say I was borrowing an egg), this involved the most amazing rye bread heated and layered with sweet butter.

Quite common was a soccer game in our back yard. Two large families with a love of "the beautiful game." This resulting in some interesting times, like when Pawel kicked the ball through my mother´s kitchen window. I got a lecture, which was strange being that I was away at college. But the backyard games continued.

Pawel and I talked - the things 15 year olds discuss. But we also discussed racial stereotypes, culture, religion, and so many deeper issues. Pawel had a quiet soul. He was a good person; something that seems to be rare these days.

I was sorry to have missed him at our 50th. But life is fickle - and can be cruel. Here, I draw upon my own Irish heritage. Fine to mourn, but better to celebrate - having had friendship, having gained insights from him, having shared perspectives.

Poignant reminders of our common mortality. God speed, my friend. Perhaps we will meet again in another plane. Thank you for the years of friendship.

Pawel will be missed by me and all his loved ones. He was like a big kid himself whenever he was with the younger kids. He played with them and interacted with all of them having fun.
