To the children of Justice Richard Sabers;
As you are well aware, your father was a kind, generous, thoughtful, amazing and brilliant man, lawyer and Justice. I worked as his Law Clerk for two years. 1990 - 1992. It was a privilege and an honor. I considered your father a mentor and a great friend, always. He dearly loved Colleen and his children and told me many stories of your lives together as a family, of which he was extremely proud.
I will mourn the loss of your father with you until we all meet again and share in eternal life. Walk in your father’s footsteps. Go in peace, and serve the Lord. Thanks be to God.
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen

Ellie, Steve, Susan, Michael and families: My condolences for your loss.
My favorite memory of Uncle Dick occurred when I was about 12 years old and visiting Grandma Elrena. She had just baked several pies and needed to go deliver one of them. She told me Uncle Dick was due to stop by and under no circumstances was I to let him touch the pies. Well after a hearty greeting to the Chicago nephew, Dick proceeded to dig into one of the pies. Upon Grandma's arrival he did his best to argue his case, but it was to no avail, and Judge Elrena won that one. His sense of humor was a great gift for all he encountered.
My thoughts and prayers are with you.

I was so sad to hear of your father's passing this past week. My heart sank when I heard the news, as I know how very much you loved, admired, and respected him. He was such a decent man, whom I know will be greatly missed. I feel blessed to have known him. Praying that you find comfort and peace in the memories and legacy he leaves behind.

Dick interned with my father when I was in high school. I have fond memories of he and Colleen being at my house before they were married and thinking they were so cool (which they were). They remained good friends over the years. He will be missed. My sincere sympathies.

I am so very sorry for your family’s loss. Justice Sabers was kind, funny, and a fiercely proud of his family and profession. He was my first boss after law school and was pivotal in helping me to understand what it means to be an advocate in every way. His carved Santa appears in my home every Christmas and evokes fond memories. I am holding your family in my thoughts and I hope that your grief will soon be tempered by the knowledge that he most assuredly lives on in generations of young lawyers and as a vital voice in South Dakota law.

I mostly know Dick through the eyes of Sister Marie Celeste. She was so proud of him and enjoyed spending time with him and his family. We are sure she was there to welcome him and show him around. I am grateful for the many years of dedicated service Dick gave to the people of South Dakota. My prayers for the family. Sister Mary Thomas.

Mike -(and family) I’m so sorry to hear about your dad. He was such a wonderful man. Ironically, just last week I was putting away my Christmas stuff and held a wooden Santa he carved for me and thought about him and all our fun lake memories. It was an honor to have spent so many years knowing him.
Take care and God bless.
