Calvin Greenup Obituary

GREENUP Calvin Pinkerton, 88, died Tuesday, October 31, 2017. Calvin was born in Frankfort, Kentucky on September 30, 1929, the son of Russell Calvin and Cora Lee Higgs Greenup. Calvin graduated from Paris High School in 1947 and attended the University of Kentucky. He served in the United States Army in post-war Germany, earning the rank of Master Sargent. In 1954, he began his 35 year career with the United States Postal Department in Paris, where he ultimately served as Postmaster. Calvin joined the First Presbyterian Church in Paris in 1970, and he loyally served as a Deacon, Chairman of the Pastoral Search Committee and Organ Acquisition Committee and ultimately served as an Elder in the Church Session, including Clerk of the Session for many years. In the 1970's, he coached the First Presbyterian basketball championship team with assistant, Mick Barfield. Each and every young man who played for him always held a special place in his heart. Calvin joined Walnut Hill Church after moving to Lexington in 2004. In 1973, he received the highest honor bestowed upon a Paris High School alumnus, the Kirkpatrick Cup, established in 1936, awarded to the outstanding alumnus "symbolizing sterling characteristics" and outstanding contributions to the community. He served on the Board of Directors of the Bourbon Heights Nursing Home for 18 years, retiring in 2016. Calvin was on avid fisherman and sportsman, and he held season tickets to the University of Kentucky football basketball and games. He shared his father's love for the St. Louis Cardinals, and he came to follow the New York Yankees after attending games in both the old and new Yankee Stadium. Calvin had a passion for music, and he loved seeing musicians in concert, especially Tony Bennett. He loved to study history, including Kentucky and the Civil War, and particularly Abraham Lincoln. Calvin spent much of his later years with family traveling to Charlotte, NC; Charleston, SC; Palm Beach, Fl; New York City, and Sea Island, GA, as well as wintering in Orange Beach, Alabama with his dear friends Joyce and Emett Barfield. He annually hosted a Thursday night pre-Derby dinner and party and attended the Derby the following Saturday. He particularly enjoyed listening to the Miles Osland jazz quartet at the party in later years. Calvin is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, constant companion and best friend, Bettie Turney Greenup; a son, Lee Greenup; a daughter Elizabeth Greenup Faulkner (J. C.) Charlotte, NC, and two grandsons, Nate, 22, University of Georgia, and Sam Faulkner, 19, University of Michigan, who each brought him great joy. Also surviving are his sister, Nancy Greenup Preston (Clark), Bartley, TX, and their daughters, Nancy Clark Preston, Salado, TX, and Judy Lowe (Richard), Austin, TX; a brother-in-law, Winn Turney (Sally) and many nieces and nephews.
