Charles Sword Obituary

INEZ - Dr. Charles Douglas Sword, 71, died Saturday morning, January 18, 2014 at the University of Kentucky Hospital, losing his valiant battle with cancer. A native of Weeksbury, Floyd County, Kentucky, Doug or Doc, as he was known to most, practiced dentistry his entire 46 year career in Inez, Martin County. Son of Jim Bob Sword and Nola Blevins Sword, Doug is survived by his wife of 50 years, Sue Sword and three children Cara Parker (Michael), Charles Sword and Candace Sword, seven grandchildren Jorin Arnold, Micaela Arnold, Cara Lee Wheeler, Adolphus Wheeler, Eleanor Ickes, Chloe Sword and Jack Sword, four sisters Delores Woody (Lloyd), Daphyne McNamee (Roland), Elsie Glandon (Ovid), and Sylvia Six (Charles), one sister-in-law Midge Sword and their children and families. Proceeded in death by his parents and his brother Jim Sword. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, January 22 at 1pm in Inez, Kentucky at Richmond-Callaham Funeral Home (278 West Main Street, Inez, KY). As a graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry, he returned to his eastern Kentucky roots, to establish his dental practice in Inez, Kentucky and raise his family. He dedicated his life to the service of others both through his work and his friendship. Working until his diagnosis in May 2013, Doug loved his patients like family, treating generations of families with care and compassion. Through the years he served on many boards and committees including the Martin County Board of Education. He was very proud of being a University of Kentucky Fellow. An avid basketball fan, one of the many joys in his life was following the University of Kentucky Wildcats both at home and on the road. However, it was time on the golf course with his son, grandsons and friends, working in the yard with Sue and late-night card games with his kids and extended family that brought true joy to his life. He was the quintessential family man. We will forever remember his zest for life, his infinite wisdom and his gentle nature. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to the Martin County Historical Society at PO Box 501, Inez, KY 41224.
