David Bobo Obituary

David L. Bobo

August 26, 1944 - July 30, 2025

Destin, Florida - David L. Bobo, 80, of Destin, Florida, passed away peacefully in his home on Wednesday, July 30, 2025, surrounded by his family. He was born on August 26, 1944, in Graysville, Alabama, to Victor and Gayle Bobo.

He was married to the love of his life, Cheryl Robbins Bobo, for 35 years before her passing in 2002. They were both charter members of Christ Centered Church in Lexington, Kentucky. He was a well-known and deeply respected figure within the coal industry for many years as President/C.E.O. of Crimson Coal Corporation. He was known to handle business with great integrity and built relationships on trust and respect.

David had an incredible sense of humor and adventurous spirit. He enjoyed spending time on the ocean as captain of his yacht, the LaTeDa, on which he traveled with loved ones throughout Florida, the Florida Keys and the Bahamas. He enjoyed the simple things like sunsets with a glass of red wine and listening to bluegrass music. His most cherished moments were visits with his children and grandchildren. While Lexington, Kentucky was his home since 1980, after Cheryl's passing their beloved beachfront condominium in Destin became his permanent residence in 2004.

He was a cherished father to his two daughters, Michelle Turner (Larry) Wells and Melissa (Kenny) Burdine, and a proud grandfather (Gran-Gran) to his four grandchildren, Ashley (Hunter) Frazier, Amanda (Clay) Duncan, Grant Wiese, and Reagan Wiese. He was also blessed with three great-grandchildren, Aniston Frazier, Turner Frazier, and Gentry Duncan. David is also survived by Carolyn Joe Proctor, Vicki G. Hogan and Michael (Cindy) Robbins. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Cheryl, and his sister, Wanda Faye Zukosky.

Services will be held on Sunday, August 10, 2025 at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home, 463 East Main Street, Lexington, KY. Visitation will be 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., with services beginning at 3:00 p.m. by Mark Dunn of Macedonia Christian Church. A private entombment will take place at The Lexington Cemetery on Monday, August 11, 2025. His final resting place will be in the Lexington Mausoleum.

David was a strong fighter in his battle with Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP), a rare neurodegenerative disease. The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to his loving friend and caregiver, Ann White, Blessings After Blessings, LLC, Robin McNealy and Tommie Kelly III and the kind nurses of Gentiva Hospice. There has not been much research on this disease, in lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests all donations be made to PSP research in his honor. Donations can be made on their website WWW.PSP.ORG.

Sometimes when remembering a friend, you tend to recall their achievements (and David had many of those), but when I remember my bud David, I reflect on a BIG teddy bear who loved God, family, friends and the LaTeDa! Sure will miss that big grin!

I met David nearly 30 years ago...first, as a competitor, but quickly became friends. I learned so much from him. In our first conversation, he told me "pigs get fat but hogs get slaughtered". Sound advice that left an impression upon me, among countless others. So long for now ol friend,
but looking forward to seeing you strolling on streets of gold.

Gran-Gran you are already so missed! Some of my very favorite memories have you in them - from boating trips to so many good ones in Destin like crab island, jet ski rides, all of the good food but especially listening to Sonos while watching the sun set on the back porch of your condo countless times. My life was definitely better because of you. A piece of my heart will always feel like it´s missing until I see you again. Thankful for Jesus and the promise of Heaven!
