David was preceded in death by his mother, Elizabeth Norton. Survivors include his sister, Ann (Norton) Caudill (Harvey Browning); brother, Carl Norton, Jr.; nephew, Michael Norton (Fawn); niece, Christina Hughes and several great nieces and nephews.

David was well known as "The Flower Man," in Huntington, West Virginia where he lived. He would make flowers and sell them and some he would give away. He never knew a stranger. Everyone that met him fell in love with him. Besides making flowers, he loved to dance and show his moves. When he was younger, David's favorite pastime was fishing. He is in the National Freshwater Fishing Hall of Fame for catching the largest freshwater fish in Watts Bar Lake in Tennessee on January 24, 1984.
