David Sawyer Obituary

David Hartwell Sawyer
July 28, 1951 - November 25, 2022
Portland, Oregon - David Sawyer, a thought leader in management and leadership, an innovative consultant to organizations of all kinds, and a coach and mentor to countless established and emerging leaders, has died. He was 71.
Born in Paris, Kentucky, David Sawyer died in a hospital in Portland, Oregon on Friday, November 25. The cause of death was heart failure, after a year of declining health.
David Sawyer was president of Context, a consulting firm with practice areas in strategy, leadership, and culture, and a cofounder of Converge, a network of consultants who facilitate the formation of social impact networks. Active across sectors throughout his life, Sawyer played key roles in a variety of fields, including sustainable agriculture, education reform, national service, social entrepreneurship, venture philanthropy, the emerging green economy,
and multisector collaboration.
For a decade, David directed leadership and service-learning programs at Berea College, receiving the nation's highest award for voluntary service from the White House and The Servant Leader Award from the National Youth Leadership Council. David was an advisor to Honda's innovative Eagle Rock School, designed Save the Children's Appalachian Teen Leadership Program, and traveled to India to meet with the Dalai Lama to help design a Tibetan refugee education program at Berea College. Sawyer worked with the Clinton administration to help launch the nation's Americorps program, facilitated The New Generation Training Program and other national leadership programs, and in 1997 led a delegation to the Presidents' Summit for America's Future.
Sawyer spent four years working with energy company BP, coaching senior leaders, designing the cultural dimension of the BP/ARCO merger, and facilitating a conference on global climate change in Washington, DC. He helped develop the Denali Initiative, a national fellowship program for social entrepreneurs, and served as executive-in-residence for the Kauffman Foundation, promoting citizen engagement and civic innovation. David served as the first Executive Director of Social Venture Partners Portland and was Chief Culture Officer for gDiapers, a green business making the world's first flushable/compostable diaper. He was also a Senior Network Practitioner with the Monitor Institute by Deloitte.
Though Sawyer's professional accomplishments are vast, his lasting impact lives in his deep love for his people, his community, and our planet. Sawyer was a dedicated and generous friend to many. He was clever and wise, fun and funny, deeply serious, and eternally committed to creating positive futures for all. His life's work could perhaps be summed up by a simple tattoo on his arm that read: "maximum positive impact."
David Sawyer is survived by his brother, Stephen Shelby Sawyer, of Versailles, Kentucky.

I just learned of David´s passing and am saddened for our world that we lost such a great champion for humanity. David moved into my former home years ago and we connected after that through our nonprofit interests. He gave generously of his time and talent to coach SPOON foundation and guided us towards transformative growth. He pushed us to be open with our hearts and minds - to feel and think bigger. He led by example and has left a lasting mark on our organization and team. May his memory be a blessing.

Strategy. Leadership. Culture. Humanity. All things this loving man with an infinite compassion had an impact on during his life. Personally, all nothing compared to the impact he had on me. As a friend, as a client, and as a person. I know I may not be blood, or direct, but having grown so close to him over the years, I am truly honored, and humbled to have known him, and consider him family. His website "context" has been down for some time, but for some reason I never deleted it from my development site. It really shows just how dedicated this man was to humanity. There is no telling how far and wide the good he did while present will reverberate through time. Selected talks, articles, and essays can be found here: http://smart.egdflabs.com/reflection/

David Sawyer was one of the most incandescent and remarkable people I have ever known. I met him at a Wingspread Conference in the 1990s and he stood among all the luminaries as a one-of-a kind -- brilliant, kind, compassionate, ferocious, leaderful, enigmatic, artistic, hilarious, service-oriented, and deeply spiritual. I knew I had to know him so I made the connection and we became lifelong friends. I was the one who nominated him for the Alec Dickson Service Leader Award because I knew he lived it, and I knew he would get it because he richly deserved it. Through the years, I watched him lead my fields of service-learning, social justice, and strategic change fields with his unique, fresh, and ingenious ideas. I learned more from him than anyone else in my life about all the things that matter -- most of all how to stand in one's truth while holding the suffering of the world and remaining full of hope and optimism. He was the most complete person I have ever known. I will always feel his gentle and blazing presence, and I know he is burning brightly in the next world as well, creating maximum positive impact in all realms. I bow down, dear friend. Onward!

David Sawyer was one of the most remarkable and incandescent people I've ever known in my life. I met him at a Wingspread conference in the 1990s and knew I had met a one-of-a kind -- kind, compassionate, ferocious, enigmatic, courageous, sensitive, hilarious, truthful, service-oriented, and absolutely dedicated to the truth. He stood out in that and every venue since like a boddhisatva -- a bright blazing light of integrity, passion, calm, raw attunement to the suffering of the world, and the deepest spirituality. I was blown away, made the connection, and we became lifelong friends. I learned more from him than any other person in my life about all the things that matter. I was the one who nominated him for the Alec Dickson Servant Leadership award and knew he would get it. David became a leader and contributed significantly to my fields of service-learning, social and emotional learning, and strategic systems change in a brilliant, fresh, and unique way. He was the most complete person I've ever known and I will miss that feeling I got every time we were together or talked. It was a presence that I will feel forever. May he be remembered by all who loved him for the irreplaceable and stellar leader and human being that he was and for all the ways he changed every life he encountered. He will continue to shine the brightest light here and in all dimensions. Namaste and onward, dear friend.

David Sawyer´s a brilliant shining star who´s touched the hearts & minds of many.

So very grateful we are!

Compassion,
sensitivity,
integrity,
resilience,
courage,
growth-thru-service --
tapestry of David.

True to his simply complex enigmatic
fierce selfless self,
David burnished his own path
thru forest of life
while simultaneously,
building bridges of brighteousness,
mending hearts & minds,
awakening sensitivity
to profound deep multidimensional aspects of life & spirituality. Ever grateful, we are.

Recall David smiling, saying - "Lighten Up!"

We will never forget the day Shire went to live with Blackberry, on David and Jennifer's farm. They were friends for life...and we were forever grateful. It is so sad to lose a person with such a big and kind heart.

I was a freshman at Berea College when David entered my life. A friend noticed that I was really struggling with depression and recommended that I meet David, who ran the campus community service program, SFA. I had no idea then how much this man would change my life. Before I met David, I felt small, and struggled to believe that my life had much meaning to it. But David changed all of that. He told me, "Everybody can be great, because everybody can serve." And I believed him. David breathed life and hope and purpose into not only me, but countless others. He was my boss, my mentor, and my friend. Thank you, David. For everything.

Our heartfelt condolences. What an incredible soul. His ideas, his creativity, his honesty and his candor - not anyone like David - I am sad he is no longer here, more for myself than for David - imagine his soul continues to shine light well beyond this earthly plane. May he transition in peace. Grateful to have known him. He will be missed - a mentor for so many.

I met David only in the last few years and his devotion to humanity, the raw beauty of it, was so palatable and affected me deeply. A man to hold both compassion and fierceness with his body. David, I hope you´re playing music and singing songs where are you are.
