Hill Maury Obituary

MAURY Hill, 94, of Lexington, KY, died on January 5, 2015. He is survived by his wife of 72 years, Ann Land Maury; his daughter, Lloyd Hill Maury of Lexington; his son, Kent Maury of Bangkok, Thailand; his sister, Elizabeth Maury Kelley of Midway, and three nieces, Maury Alexander Callahan, Jane Maury Harris and Sarah Maury Patrick. He was predeceased by his son, Shreve Maury, and by his brother, Alexander Stribling Maury. Hill was the son of the late Mary Hill Maury, formerly of Columbus, GA, and Colonel Lewis A. Maury, formerly of Charlottesville, VA. He was born August 21, 1920 in Seattle, WA, where his father was stationed in the military. The family eventually settled in Woodford County on Shannon's Run Farm. When he was 14, his paternal grandmother took him around the world. His love for travel never diminished. He attended Margaret Hall and Woodford County public schools. He attended and graduated from Darlington School for Boys in Rome, GA. His tenure at Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, was interrupted by WWII, but he returned there following his war service and marriage, and graduated in 1947. He was a member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity. He enlisted in the Army in February 1942. His military training was at Fort Riley, KS. He was a member of the first mechanized cavalry after transferring from the horse cavalry. His commission was awarded to him by his father, Col. Lewis A. Maury. On D-Day Plus4 he landed at Utah Beach and was attached to the 3rd Army Cavalry Reconnaissance through France and Holland. During the latter part of the war, he was the commanding officer of a POW camp in Verdun, France. When discharged in February 1946, he had attained the rank of Captain and been awarded the Bronze Star. After the war the Maurys lived in Houston, Texas, returning to the family farm in Kentucky in 1950. At that time he entered the investment business. From 1957 to 1961 the family resided in Bogor, Indonesia, where Hill was the Business Manager for the University of Kentucky Contract Team. Upon their return to Kentucky he was associated with J.J.B. Hilliard / W.L. Lyons and Co. and later with Lincoln Investment Planning. He retired in December 2005. Hill was the 1962 Chairman of the Woodford County Thruston B. Morton re-election campaign for Senator. He was then elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives as a Republican from Woodford and Jessamine Counties in 1963 and served one term. He was the first Republican elected from this district. He then ran for the State Senate but lost. He was also a Kentucky delegate for Barry Goldwater to the 1964 Republican Convention at Cow Palace in San Francisco. He remained involved in politics the rest of his life. Hill was a founding member of the Lexington Cricket Club, a member of the Civil War Round Table, the Lexington Club, and Christ Church Cathedral. He did volunteer work at the University of Kentucky library, particularly enjoying the map section. He organized a Great Books Club in both Lexington and in Bogor, Indonesia. He complemented his love of books with his love of traveling. He and his family explored many remote places. Their best trip was following the overland route of the Silk Road from Beijing to Karachi. The family wishes to thank all personnel at Taylor Manor Nursing Home in Versailles, and Ann Richmond, also of Versailles, who gave richly of her time and faith to ensure that he received the Episcopal Eucharist every Sunday during the last year of his life Visitation will be from 5-7pm on Thursday, January 8 at Milward, 159 N. Broadway, Lexington. Interment at the Lexington Cemetery will be private. Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Taylor Manor Nursing Home in Versailles or the charity of one's choice. www.milwardfuneral.com

Mrs. Maury, I am so sorry to hear of Hill's passing. I met Hill several years ago when I worked in Young Library at UK. Though I had not seen him in a few years, he was often in my thoughts. Please accept my deepest condolences.

I had the privilege of working with Hill over several years as he helped process the UK Libraries' WW2 military map collection and compiled an index to our whiskey distillery maps. I will always remember him as a pleasant, southern gentleman. My deepest sympathy to your family.

I am saddened by this news--Mr. Maury was one of my college guardian angels when I was at U.K. with you Kent. I will share a special story with you Kent in an e-mail& I would like for you to share it with your Mom & sister! It is an example of what a kind & thoughtful man he was! To Kent and Ann:
I was very saddened to hear of Hill's death yesterday. I really enjoyed meeting with and talking with him over the years even though our contact has been nil for almost thirty years. I will always remember him as the first person I did any investments with and the conversations we had when I was quite a young man in my twenties and in my first professional job. I still have one of the letters he sent me encouraging me to invest more as the market was done and how he could guarantee me by dollar cost averaging the market would surely hit the new average price before it returned to the market high. I also enjoyed jawing with him over politics as we were on opposite sides and how he took Kent and I to a dinner where a well known Republican spoke about overspending and the national debt. It was eye opening for me and I enjoyed being in his company.
I also remember joining him, Ann and Kent for dinner in Philadelphia one evening when Kent was working for the Marriott before leaving for overseas to stay permanently. Before dinner, we met in his room and he was proud of his Valentine Day shorts which he sported. Most of all, I cherished his sound advice and our talking politics. I can still see him taking his glasses on and off as we talked while he was making his point and how he always enjoyed the conversation.
RIP Hill Maury!
