John Hutchinson Obituary

John F. Hutchinson
December 14, 1934 - May 6, 2022
Lexington, Kentucky - John Hutchinson often joked that he lived longer than he and everyone ever thought possible considering all his crazy antics. After 87 years on this earth, John decided that if he couldn't go out and grill a steak then it was time for him to go and with that the Lord agreed, calling him home on May 6th, 2022. As a young boy, he learned his strong work ethic and love of serving others from his parents, John and Anna Hutchinson, while working at the family business, Hutchinson Drug Store. His wonderful sense of humor and jovial nature was developed on his own. John was never without a story or joke to tell and was especially happy when he could pull a light-hearted prank on a friend like parking a Super C tractor in their front yard to draw attention to their birthday. John was born on December 14, 1934, in Lexington, KY and with three sisters (Agnes Donati, Sandy Hutchinson, and Patty Thornberry) he had many opportunities to practice sharpening his wit. His humor caught the attention of the love of his life, Gloria Lovelace Hutchinson who he met while taking biochemistry. After convincing Gloria to marry him in 1959, John had to go serve in the U.S. Army. Upon his return and armed with more stories of the antics he pulled while serving, he worked as a pharmacist at Hutchinson Drug in downtown Lexington until he retired and closed the store. In addition to his wife of almost 65 years, he is survived by their five kids, John Hutchinson, Mike (Debby Ann Powell) Hutchinson, Geanie (Neal) Umberger, James Hutchinson, and Deborah (Jeff Kimmel) Hutchinson. He often bragged to anyone who'd listen about his grandchildren (Alexia, Nathan, Kara, and Rebecca), sharing his wisdom and humor with them as well as with his many nieces and nephews who he loved. John enjoyed life, following his alma matter Ole Miss Rebels, tinkering on his farm, playing golf, and hanging out with family and friends. He never knew a stranger and was always willing to help those in need. We invite family and friends to come share their favorite stories of John's life at the visitation Tuesday, May 10th from 5pm to 7pm at Milward-Broadway. The funeral mass will be held at St. Elizabeth Ann Seaton on Wednesday, May 11th at 11am, immediately following will be the graveside service and burial at Calvary Cemetery. The family would like to thank the wonderful staff of Bluegrass Care Navigators (Hospice), Deacons Mark Woelfel and Paul Root, the staff of Morning Pointe East and Pine Meadows, and the many friends and family who supported him during his final time with us. If you don't want to send flowers, you may consider a donation to the Catholic Actin Center, Hope Center, or Salvation Army, then again prayers work just as well. www.milwardfuneral.com

I worked for Mr. H. as a pharmacist during the early 1990's while continuing my education at the University of Kentucky. He was always so kind to me (and everyone else), and I really enjoyed talking to him. He taught me a great deal about investing in the Stock Market. I think about him often and greatly appreciate his friendship. He always made me feel like I was a member of his family - I still feel that closeness 30 years later.

John's parents and my Grandparents, Jim and Alma Gormley were very close for decades, and my father, Jimmy Gormley, and Uncle, Clarke Gormley, knew John well when they were all children and Boy Scouts together at St. Paul's Church. I had a wonderful conversation with John when I moved back to Lexington from Atlanta in 2009. He had warm, kind things to say about my family and his memories of them. John led a good life. May he rest in peace.

My prayers for Gloria and their family! John has been the nicest, well mannered and fun gentleman I have gotten to know over the past two years working at Morning Pointe East. I loved finding a movie request from him and that he loved my homemade cookies I would bring just for him and Gloria. He never wanted anyone to fuss over him, and he made sure not just his wife, but any of the ladies around them were taken care of. I will miss his funny jokes and stories, and I just know he is telling more up in heaven while waiting to see the rest of his family some day! God bless!

Mr.Hutchinson was a great man, we would always be mowing the grass and would stop at our fences and talk for hour or so, always cutting up,and at the beginning of the season, he would always pull up in our driveway next door, and would bring me 4 tomato plants, and tell me I wanted you to be the first kid on the block to have maters. He was so full of stories and advice. He was surely a great neighbor and friend. He will be greatly missed.
