John Newton Obituary

NEWTON John Wesley, 84, husband of Nell F. Newton, died Tue, Dec 27, 2016 at Thomson-Hood Veterans Center in Wilmore, KY. Born June 7, 1932 in Shelbyville, KY, he was the son of the late Marvin and Violet Clemmons Newton. John was a Shelbyville High School and University of Kentucky graduate, and was a member of Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity. John served his country in the U.S. Army. He was employed for over thirty years in pharmaceutical sales for Ciba-Geigy Corporation and was a member of Southern Hills United Methodist Church. John had a great love of God's word, and taught Sunday school for decades. After retirement, John and Nell traveled extensively, visiting all contiguous 48 states, Alaska, half of the provinces in Canada, and Italy. He was an avid golfer and continued to play piano with remarkable skill. He loved to tell stories of his adventures and travels, and many have become quite legendary. Survivors other than his wife include children, David Newton, Lexington, KY, Ann (Lonnie) Lewis, Frankfort, KY, and Troy Newton, Lexington, KY; step-son, Don Dixon, Ft. Thomas, KY; step-daughter, Cheryl (Craig) Morgan, Lexington; six grandchildren, Matthew Newton, Taylor and Blaine Lewis, and Tory, Tanner and Tara Newton; three step-grandchildren, Lily Dixon, Hannah and Evan Morgan, two sisters, Ann Porter of Shelbyville, KY and Billye Cook of Lexington, KY. He was preceded in death by two brothers, Andriel Newton and Marvin Newton Jr. Funeral services will be held 11am Fri, Dec 30, at Southern Hills United Methodist Church by Dr. Bill Moore. Burial will follow in Camp Nelson National Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7pm Thur at Kerr Brothers Funeral Home -Harrodsburg Rd. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Alzheimer's Association, 6100 Dutchman's Lane, Suite 401, Louisville, KY 40205.
