Karl Kegley Obituary

VANCEBURG - Karl Kegley, 88, and noted Lewis County businessman, died May 3, 2008 at Southern Ohio Medical Center. He was born July 22, 1919 at Stricklett, KY and the last surviving son of James Mathew and Elizabeth Johnson Kegley. In early years, Mr. Kegley was a distributor for the Ashland Oil Co. and a partner in Kegley-Tannian Co. In 1958, Mr. Kegley became one of the states pioneers in radio broadcasting, founding WKKS Radio Station. He was a partner in Davis Construction Co., building and maintaining highways throughout Northeastern, KY and West Virginia. Foremost, he operated Karl Kegley War Surplus for many years dealing both locally and internationally from Vanceburg. He also served as a director of the First Community Bank of Lewis County and was a World War II Coast Guard veteran. Mr. Kegley was a member of the First Christian Church in Vanceburg. He is survived by four daughters, Patricia Harrison, Carol Hull and husband Phillip both of Vanceburg, KY, Jane Lewis of Lexington, KY and Karla Dickerson and husband Dr. Gene Dickerson of Sumter, SC, six grandchildren, Donald Harrison and wife Selena of Greenup, KY, Andy Plummer and wife Heather of Philadelphia, PA, Avery Lee Stanley and wife Holly of Crestview Hills, KY, Ella Jane Dickerson of Columbia, SC and Anna Dickerson and Gene F. Dickerson Jr. of Charleston, SC and three great grandchildren Cody Harrison, Adeline Stanley and Avery Stanley III. He is also survived by his former wife Maxine Garvey Kegley of Sarasota, FL. Additional survivors include nieces, nephews and friends Dorcas Gilbert. He leaves behind a special companion his black lab, Buddy. Preceded in death by a sister Katie Kegley Knapp, five Kegley brothers Hubert, Harvey, Norman, Delbert and Ray and his children's mother Christine Lykins Kegley. Services for Mr. Kegley will be held Tue, May 6, 2008 at 11am at the Vanceburg Christian Church with Pastor Rob Morton officiating. Visitation will be Mon from 5-9pm at Dickerson Funeral Home and one hour prior to the service on Tue at Vanceburg Christian Church. Memorial contributions may be made to the Vanceburg Christian Church 408 Front St. Vanceburg, KY 41179.
