Lee Shine Obituary

SHINE, Lee Chadwick, 70, died Friday in Lexington where he lived most of his life. Born in Maryville, TN, Lee recently retired after practicing medicine for over 40 years as a board-certified internist in private practice. He enjoyed a strong affiliation with Lexington hospitals, chief among them Samaritan. He graduated from Henry Clay High School, the University of Kentucky and Vanderbilt School of Medicine. He was an intern, resident and fellow at Barnes Hospital in St. Louis before becoming the first chief resident in internal medicine at the University of Kentucky College of Medicine. In addition to numerous other honors and appointments, he was regarded as a strong advocate for nurses and other allied health professionals. He is survived by Faith "Soupy" Way, his wife of 46 years; his five children and their spouses Catherine "C-Berry" Shine, Stephen "The Pope" Shine (Stephanie), Lisa "Louigi" Shine Vaden (Jonathan), Philip "Flip Flop" Shine (Janine), and James Hill "Piccolo" Shine; four grandchildren Jessica, Emily, Leigh and Chadwick; as well as his sister, Sonia Fox. He was preceded in death by sister Karen Seebeck. Lee was an avid University of Kentucky basketball fan, and spent several years assisting and traveling with the team during Coach Joe B. Hall's tenure. He will also be remembered by many as an enthusiastic gentleman gardner and orchardist, with additional keen interests in beekeeping, zymurgy, swimming, canoeing in Canada, and building elaborate sand castles. Lee's warmth and commanding presence embraced everyone, including family, patients, colleagues, and all who crossed his path. A wonderful and loving grandfather who eagerly anticipated spending time with family, he was full of knowledge and never tired of acquiring more. Whitehall Funeral Chapel in charge of arrangements. Dear Faith,
I was thinking of Lee and our growing up and med school days, so I searched. I am so sorry. I never got to see him again since med school. What a great buddy he was, helping me with homework, doing crazy things, keeping everyone laughing while we were under such stress. Once in 5th grade he boasted he could jump the hedge ( age 12) but caught his foot on the wire running thru it and smashed face down on the curb. 2 black eyes, horrible swollen face with headaches, he probably had a concussion (but no one ever went to the dr back then ! I know how you still are hurting, but God is our comfort, and I pray that you are leaning on Him still. Love in Christ, Nancy Dunn Hancock

I worked for Dr. Shine when he was in practice with Dr. Maxon, Dr. Dawson and Dr. Farley. It was one of the best jobs because they were so ethical and caring. Dr. Shine chastised me for something when he call in from the hospital. I didn't say anything back and when he returned to the office he apologized because I hadn't done what he thought. The full staff just about fell down because they had never heard him apologize before. And when he dictated some medical words on tape for me to transcribe he would say "Now, let's see if you can spell this one Teddy". He would laugh while taping and I would smile when I was typing. He was 'good people'.

To Faith and Family, I have just now heard of Dr Shine's passing and am deeply saddened. I was fortunate to have been one of his family practice residents in the late 1980s and learned so much during my time with him. He was a great mentor and he made medicine fun. I especially enjoyed our friendship over the years and the times I visited your farm. I have fond memories of our soup lunches at Good Sam when I worked there, too. Lee made everyone feel like an old friend. I can't tell you the profound impact he had on my life. I will really miss him.

Dr. Shine was covering for Dr. Gay the weekend that my mother passed away. She had been in the hospital for over 3 weeks. Dr. Shine offered such good advice and medical care and comfort through this difficult time. I did not know Dr. Shine prior to that experience. He helped not only our mother at the end of her life but he helped us as well. I will never forget his kindness.

His enthusiasm for life was boundless and contagious, as was his sharing spirit. His mentoring and friendship had an invaluable impact on my life as they did on the lives of so many others. He was always larger than life, a true renaissance man whose memory will forever bring a smile in the hearts of those who knew him. May you be blessed with peace and comfort.

Wife and children, I am so sorry for your loss. He was my Doctor for

over 30 years. We shared so much from gardening to politics. When I had an office visit I could count on being there 2 hours. We all loved him dearly. He was my mother's doctor also. I hated to see him retire so bad. He treated me for the same illiness he had. I miss him a lot.

I am saddened to hear of Dr. Shine's death. I was his Family Practice resident in the summer/fall of 1987. His enthusiasm for the hospital practice of medicine was inspiring. I try to inspire my students and use his example daily. His excitement about gaining new knowledge and his encouragement also led me to train in nuclear cardiology. Thank you for sharing him with the Family Practice residents at UK.

I heard so many good things about Dr. Shine before I ever laid eyes on him. He had been my husband's grandparents' physician for years. I finally had the privilege of meeting him on the elevator my first week working at Good Samaritan. There was no mistaking him--the joviality, that likeness to Santa Claus, those red suspenders! In his own Santa-like way, he gave so much to so many outside of his profession. He will be missed. Our prayers are with you this holiday season.

To the Shine Family,

I was a new nurse in the ICU at Good Samaritan when I first encounted that robust and friendly constantly smiling Dr. Shine. "Don't be so formal...call me Lee"....that is how he was...so down to earth, comforting, teaching and nurturing. We ALL loved him. He never was too busy to help. His mere presence in a room brighted even the worst of days. I still tell "Dr. Shine" stories....they still fill people that he never met with happiness. The world is a smaller place without him. I will never forget how he touched my life. May you know that many have been blessed to have known him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you. Amy Yessin RN

Dr. Shine, along with Dr. Maxson, was my mother's, my grandmother's, my grandfather's,my aunt and my two uncle's doctor. He was a friend of our family for years. I lost my mother February 2001 at age 90. She had received EXCELLENT care.

He was a wonderful man and I was fortunate to have met him during several visits to with mother at Kentucky Internal Medicine and to her at Samaritan, before my move from California and after my permanent move here to Lexington in 2001.

God's blessings and healing to the family on their loss.

Sincerely,

John Witt (Lexington) Vivian Northrup (Frankfort), Bill and Bobby Robinson (Lexington).

My sincere and deepest sympathy to the family of Dr. Shine. I called on him for many years as a 'detailman' and he always made me feel welcome in his office and at the Good Samaritan doctors lounge.

He was a fine doctor and a true Gentleman.

Faith...Lee was a great benefactor to me both as a Counselor and as my Primary Physician for more than 25 years. He also cared for my Father Alex and my Mother Frances and aided me in profound heart-to-heart ways during their final days. His service always went beyond duty.

My memories of you date back to our days together in the Concert Band at Lafayette High School in 1955, your brother Pete, and your able father leading the Salvation Army.

Thank you for being an integral part of the quality of Lee's life.
