Leonard Brown Obituary

80, of Louisville, died at his home on Wednesday, August 19, 2020. Leonard grew up in Lexington, attended Lexington Catholic High School, received his BS degree from Transylvania University where he was a member of Phi Kappa Tau Fraternity, and MA in Secondary Guidance Counseling from Western Ky. University. He was preceded in death by his parents J. Ardath and Mary Margaret Garland Brown, a sister, Mary Margaret Brown, and daughter, Lauren Elizabeth Roberts. He is survived by his wife, Gail Lutz Brown, son, Dan and his wife, Angie Brown, son-in-law, Chris Roberts and grandchildren, Elizabeth Roberts, Cole Roberts, Jackson and Jenna Brown all of Louisville, and a brother, Rev. William G. Brown, Frankfort, Ky., and several nephews and nieces. He was a member of Southeast Christian Church. A science teacher, he was also assistant athletic director, boys’ JV and varsity basketball coach and guidance counselor for the Jefferson County Public Schools at Western High School. Due to current Covid 19 restrictions a private burial will be held. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held at a future date. Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the Home of the Innocents, Hosparus, or Southeast Christian Church. Arrangements are under the direction of the Hall-Taylor Funeral Home of Taylorsville, and online condolences may be expressed at www.halltaylorfuneralhomes.com.

"Mr. Brown" was my favorite coach at Western HS. He was always pleasant, upbeat, motivational and inspirational. I was strongly considering transferring to Butler HS during my Senior year because I loved the golfing staff there. But when I learned Mr. Brown was going to join us as coach at Western, I decided to stay put and I fully enjoyed my final year playing on the golf team there. Simply put, Mr. Brown was the greatest! May he rest in the arms of Jesus forever.

It is no trouble at all for me to call up vivid memories of my younger years,when Leonard and I spent many hours, nearly every day, playing basketball, football, baseball, or aggravating his brother Bill who was constantly preparing for a neighborhood magic show. I had many meals cooked by his sweet mother, and carried on many agitating conversations with his Uncle Leonard. I stayed overnight at least once a month, sometimes more, so Mrs.Brown had to have eternal patience to put up with all of us. I feel blessed that brother Bill arranged a meeting at Leonard's home, as well as a delicious meal prepared by his lovely wife, and this was done at a time Leonard and I could enjoy each other's company just as we had done for many years.
RIP dear friend and brother, Leonard.

I still miss seeing Mr. Brown. He would visit me at my office on a regular basis until I retired in 2003. I fondly remember him as my assistant golf coach at Western HS and how he was more like a regular guy having fun playing with us rather than coaching us. He always had an upbeat personality and liked to tell jokes on occasion. May he rest in the arms of Jesus.

Hard for me to believe that a year has passed since my boyhood friend, Leonard, passed away. Brother Bill and I have been in constant contact, and even spent some time together. Still, hard to believe Leonard is not here with us, at least on this earth. Keep resting in peace, pal Leonard. We will play golf and talk basketball again, sooner than we realize.

Mr. Brown was a wonderful person and teacher. He took a special interest in the class of '69. It was great to see him at our 50th reunion. I along with many others honor him and his memory and pray for his family. He will be missed.

Mr. Brown was my assistant Golf coach at Western High School back in the 1964-67 era. He was a great guy with a wonderful personality. After all those years since high school, I was honored to see him at my mother's funeral in 2010. My thoughts and prayers will be with his family during this time of sorrow.

I want to offer my condolences to the entire Brown family in your time of loss. Leonard and I have been friends for over 73 years, and it has been a close friendship to say the least. We were more like brothers, seeing each other daily and taking part in all kinds of sports. We did our share of arguing with brother Bill, but helped him set up his magic shows for the neighborhood kids. His mother treated me like one of the family, including baking me a wonderful cake on my 12th birthday. I am so happy to have been blessed with his friendship, as well as his family's. I am pleased he is now with the Lord, sorry for me that I can't go see him or talk on the phone with him. Brother Bill and I will continue. RIP pal Leonard.
