Lionel Hawse Obituary

Lionel Anthony Hawse was born on April 3, 1942 to Laverne and Phyllis Hawse in Davenport, Iowa. He grew up in Rock Island, Illinois and graduated from Rock Island High School. He attended the University of Iowa and the University of Kentucky, graduating with an accounting degree. He was a proud alumnus of the University of Kentucky College of Law, Class of 1967. In 1965 he married the love of his life Eleanor Louise Congleton. Together they raised their two boys, Alan and David Hawse, in Lexington, KY. Lionel practiced law for thirty-five years first at Landrum Patterson and Dickey and eventually at Woodward, Hobson, and Fulton. He was of counsel at Dinsmore. Following his retirement he was a Donovan Scholar at the University of Kentucky and became a Master Gardener. Lionel loved the time he spent with his grandchildren be it fishing in the creek, building a project, gardening or tubing on the lake. Lionel was most at peace early in the morning in his garden or on the lake with his fishing buddies, friends, or family. He passed peacefully in his sleep on October 29, 2025 a mere twenty-four hours before his beloved wife, Ellie. He is survived by his sons' families Alan, Jill, Anna, and Nicholas Hawse and David, Beth, Michael, Thomas, and Kate Hawse. Lionel was a long-time board member of the YMCA of Central Kentucky and the family asks for donations to be made there in lieu of flowers.

I have only known Lionel for a little over a year,
But he was a blessing to me. He shared his gardening knowledge with me last fall when I needed help with my roses. I will miss him.

Lionel was a good friend as we were 'pals' at a young age and kept our friendship with he and Ellie until their passing. Not only will his family miss him and her, their will be a huge void for all who knew them. John & Ellen Finfrock

Frank worked with Lionel professionally when we first moved to Lexington in 1984 and we became friends with him and Ellie soon after. Frank and Lionel always enjoyed working together, and later, after both had retired, would enjoy rehashing each and every case in minute detail. He and I shared a love for gardening and many times he would appear at our door, shovel in hand, to divide a perennial for his garden. We'll miss our friendship very much!

Lionel was a law school classmate [U KY, 1967]. He was a forthright, smart, amiable, and generous man who always treated everyone with exceptional respect. As he was a professional through and through, I am honored to have known him and expect that his family shall have many great memories to cherish always. John C Hunsaker III

With much admiration for Lionel´s kind heart and love of knowledge. With wonderful memories of the `old lawyers´ of Lexington I send to his family my deepest sympathy. Tricia Milner

Wow, together for 60 years and passed within 24 hours of each other, then walked hand in hand through the pearly gates. If only we all could be so lucky!
