Mrs. Miller,
I was extremely sorry to read about Mack's death. He was such a good friend of Dad, Charlie and Hi along with Hampton Henton and all of the Woodford County boys that found their way to Bolles. I still remember like yesterday when he trained Crock for Hurstland and I remember when he got the job with Mr. Englehard and then bought Mr. Leader from us in 1967 at Keeneland and trained him and then was so helpful in arranging for Mr. Englehard to stand him back at Hurstland. He looked after me when I made my 1st trip to the Saratoga sales as a young teenager. I even had a horse that Dad and I bred, Truth of it All, running in the Derby when Sea Hero won and he was so nice to me in the paddock at Churchill Downs that day. He was such a wonderful person and I always enjoyed seeing him and speaking with him when I would run into him at Kroger's the past few years. He always had something nice to say and was always so thoughtful about the Nuckols. I'll never forget how after my Uncle Charlie died and I wrote the article for "The Final Turn" in the Blood-Horse, Mack called and told me how much he enjoyed the article and that I could write about him anytime. Well, I just wanted to write and tell you what a wonderful man he was and how much I have respected him since my youth and what a privilege it has been to know him.

Mrs. Miller: I am sure you do not remember my simple note those so many years ago, It was a simple congratulations on Sea Hero's Derby victory. I sent it not expecting a response. I was extremely hearten when you took the time to answer. I did not know either you or your husband personally, but felt you both represented what was good and noble in the sport. I send my condolences to you and your family, and I will always treasure your thoughtfulness

Mack was a class act and a true gentleman in every sense of the word. He set the example for many horsemen. He will be missed as his mold is gone forever.
