Mary Curtin Obituary
MEMORIAL SERVICE Dr. Mary Ellen Curtin passed away on Jan 1, 2007 in Bluffton, SC and was interred with her husband in the Lexington Cemetery on Jan 10, 2007. A joint memorial service will be held at the Lexington Cemetery at 11am on Sat, April 21. All friends are invited to attend. Robert Emmett Curtin was born Oct 23, 1917 in Washington, D.C., and graduated from Southeastern University with Honors in Accounting at the age of twenty. While in the Army, he met and later married Mary Ellen Kunkel. Mr. Curtin worked for Kentucky Finance Company, Inc. for 38 years, retiring in 1985 as Senior Vice-President, Secretary-Treasurer, and Board Member. They moved to Hilton Head, SC in 1985, and he passed away July 9, 1994. Mary Ellen Kunkel was born in Carthage IL on Feb 6, 1922. She graduated from the Methodist School of Nursing as an R. N., and served as an Army nurse during WWII. Mrs. Curtin reenrolled at the University of Kentucky and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa in 1956, earning a Ph. D. there in 1965. She was employed by Eastern Kentucky University and the V A Hospital, and served on the LFUCG Police Merit Board. She was active in many professional organizations, including President of the Central Kentucky Psychological Association, Chairman and Secretary of the Psychology Section of the Kentucky Academy of Science, as well as President, Secretary, and Treasurer of the Kentucky Psychological Association. On the national level, she was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association, Representative to the APA Council for Tennessee and Kentucky, and was on the Council of the Southern Society for Philosophy and Psychology. She authored various journal articles and was the editor of Symposium on Love, published by Behavioral Publications in 1973. While in Hilton Head, both were active in the Friends of Bluffton Library, the Meals on Wheels Board, and many facets of the Episcopal Church of the Cross. Mr. Curtin was also Treasurer of the Hilton Head Power Squadron until he died. The Curtins are survived by two daughters, Barbara Ellen Curtin of Lexington and Jane Ellwood Curtin (Mrs. Carl, Jr.) Vertuca of Boulder, CO and Scottsdale, AZ. The grandchildren are Anne Browning Frazier (Mrs. Richard) Koehler of Roanoke, VA, Robert Kenney Eidson of Montecito CA, Carl Robert Vertuca III (Heather), Robert Emmett Curtin Vertuca, and Mara Darcey Vertuca, all of Boulder CO, and Bryan William Thomas Vertuca of Scottsdale, AZ. Greatgrandchildren are Robert Richard Koehler and Anne Marie Koehler, both of Roanoke VA.
