Robert Rouse Obituary

ROUSE Robert Kelly, 88, Daytona Beach, FL, died peacefully at the home of his daughter, Rindy Nyberg, Ormond Beach, FL, on Sat, June 7, 2008. Memorial services were held Sat, June 14, 2008, at First Presbyterian Church, 620 S. Grandview Avenue, Daytona Beach. A graveside service will be held at a later date when he is interred beside his wife Luane in the family plot in the Lexington Cemetery in Lexington, KY. Robert Kelly Rouse was born June 1, 1920, in Washington, DC, where his father was a member of Congress. He grew up in Erlanger and in Lexington. He graduated from Duke University in 1942. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II as an officer in charge of five-inch, .38 caliber Gunnery School, and co-authored an instructional manual adopted by the Navy. After the war, he returned to Lexington and engaged in various business interests. He was president of the Lexington Exchange Club and District Governor for Eastern Kentucky. He moved to Daytona Beach with his family in 1957, and was president of the A1A Motel Association in the early 1960s. Mr. Rouse and his wife owned and operated the Crow's Nest Gift Shop on Seabreeze Blvd. from 1966 until his retirement in 1982. He loved to travel and visited all seven continents, more than sixty countries and sailed five oceans. He generously hosted family reunions in Vail, CO, Barbados and other Caribbean Islands, and on numerous cruise ships. He was a fan of horseracing, women's professional tennis and the Red Sox, and he followed world affairs and politics with great interest. Mr. Rouse delivered Meals on Wheels for eighteen years, and volunteered at First Presbyterian Church, where he also served as Chairman of the Board of Deacons and as an Elder. He was predeceased by Luane Adams Rouse, his beloved wife of fifty-seven years. He is survived by son and daughter-in law, Judge Robert K. Rouse, Jr. and Donna Rouse, Ormond Beach, FL; son and daughter-in-law Arthur A. and Josephine Rouse, Louisville; daughter Virenda Nyberg, Ormond Beach, FL; daughter Elisa Rouse, Seaside, OR; brother and sister-in-law, Arthur B. Rouse, Jr. and Joan Rouse, Lexington; six cherished grandchildren, Kelly Rouse, Woodland Hills, CA, Erin Rouse Smith, Tallahassee, FL, John E. Nyberg, Washington, DC, Christy Nyberg, New York, NY, Arthur A. Rouse, Jr., Louisville, Alicia Rouse, Huntington Beach, CA; and two dear great-grandchildren, Nathan Smith and Erica Smith, Tallahassee, FL. In lieu of other remembrances, the family suggests donations to This Child Here, c/o First Presbyterian Church, 620 S. Grandview Avenue, Daytona Beach, FL, 32118, or Heifer International, One World Avenue, Little Rock, AR, 72202.
