Dear Shirley,

I have been out of town and only just heard the news about Ron. I am so sorry. My eyes are filled with tears writing this. You know I love both you and Ron, begining in those days in the late '70's. I am proud to have had the pleasure of knowing Ron. He had that rare talent of making people better...I'll miss him. I imagine he is up in heaven winning talent contests with that teeth picking trick. No one could ever match that.

Sorry about your loss I know Ron because he used to come into Central Bank and I always used to wait on him and he was such a pleasure to wait on he was always so nice. He actually got me an apple which was like a raise only with an apple. Always a delight he would always come in and talk about Amanda and Ron how smart they were and how he was SO PROUD. I went to school with Amanda and graduated and I just want to say Sorry Amanda and Family he will be missed sincerely around the world. God Bless You all.

Initially, I had the pleasure of knowing Ron through his music. Working weekends at a Louisville bar where Ron often played gave me the chance to meet Ron, the musician. After Ron learned I attended UK in Lexington, our conversations changed, and I had the wonderful experience of meeting Ron, the father. The only time he seemed happier than talking about music, was when he was bragging about his kids.

Ron was a beautiful man to know. He will be missed greatly by every life he touched.

My deepest sympathy to Ron’s family:

Ron and I first played music together in a band called Jasper at Ho-Jo’s in 1989.

Since then, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a couple of musical projects, here and there, with him.

I loved to go listen to Ron play when my band is not playing. He was such a great guy and musician. Ron had a way of making everyone around him feel comfortable, and happy to be experiencing the “moment”.

I’m happy to have known such an awesome person, and deeply sad that the man and his music is gone.

I’ll miss him.

a song to send ron off to that barroom in the sky...

Lookin’ Fine

(in memory of Ron Harris)

The last time I saw you down at the bar

How it made me smile when you played my guitar

You said, “Girl, you know, you sure are lookin’ fine”

And you took my hand, put it to your chest

You told me, “Life’s a gamble, but I’ll place my bets

There’s just too much livin’ left in this heart of mine”

I said, “Even though I know we’re all on borrowed time

It seems to me, you sure are lookin’ fine”

And what about that night at the Devil’s Inn?

You looked up when I walked in, with a Cheshire grin

You said, “Girl, how long has it been?”

When you took your break, you pulled up a barstool

Said, “Can you believe my boy’s in school?

I haven’t felt this good in I don’t know when”

Now I am picturing a barroom

Where Johnny Cash still sings

I see you sitting at the bar with all the queens and kings

With your flyin’ shoes and your silver wings…

And I can see the neon shining in your eyes

You can hear that music play ‘til the end of time

Yes I can see those neons shining in your eyes

And Lord knows, you sure are lookin’ fine

If I stood on a chair I could look into Ron Harris' eyes.

Eight years ago I played two songs at his blues jam in the Rosebud then put my guitar away, but he wasn't going to let me off that easy - he got me up to sit in with him for the rest of the night and there followed 4 months of school with the big man who I called Mr Harris. 2 nights a week for 4 months he let me sit in with the Brothers and learn how to listen and play along with him. Not every musician would give a young performer such a chance to learn. It truly was the time of my life. I don't have the words to express my sadness at last night's news. I feel lucky, though, to have been in Lexington last October and to get up there with him once more. it will always make me smile.

I often wondered if he knew that what I really loved was just to play rythym to his lead. Thank you for letting me play with you, Mr Harris. I will never forget all that you gave me.

My thoughts are with you, Shirley, little Ron and Amanda.

To Ron's family, my deepest sorrow was to hear from a friend that Ron passed away...I moved away from Lexington 6 years ago and when ever I came back to Lexington to visit my daughters, I would ask my friends where was Ron Playing? I used to hear him play at Shooters on Sunday's.

As a Blues fan, I have been to many places listening to the Blues and whenever I heard him play he always surprised me how talented he was, We would dance our butts off when he played...he always pleased me when I would hear him play...I will borrow a line from my favorite movie "It's a Wonderful Life"...a man is not a failure as long as he has friends... Ron was a wonderful man and blues artist and he will be surly missed... my heart was sadden by the news, but I am happy and blessed to have known him as a friend and truly blessed to hear him play... I will always remember him as a man who had many friends, and as a Blues artist who played a mean guitar...I hope in my next life I get a chance to shake his hand hear him play for me again...

This is a frustrating but adorable part of the musician's life . . . you meet someone, make the best friend you ever had in five minutes and then you don't see each other again for months and months. I've known Ron for several years but spent precious little time with him. I recal one rather unispiring Sunday wandering over to a watering hole where he was jamming and, at his urging, jumped up on stage and played "Knockin On Heaven's Door" with Ron and the band. He was always very generous with his stage and spotlight, he would share it with anyone who came along. My heart and my best wishes go out to the family of a very fine man. He will be missed by many.

Although I never heard his music, I really enjoyed hearing about his music, his life, his family, and his travels. I remember how excited he was when his band was going to be playing on TV in Lexington. I would like to express my condolences to his family and friends. Ron will be missed by all of us at the VA.

Shirley,

For one to have lived a mere 52 years and to have used his life to help so many others, and enjoyed his life and his gifts and talent by sharing and creating so many memories , has got to make God one happy creator. They say that creation is still in progress, isn't it overwhelming in comfort and peace to know that Ron is always going to be a part of it, and us! I wish every moment of your family's sadness to be framed in wonderful memories of a life well lived

Sincerely, Kathi

Ron was the best blues man

to ever grace the melody bar stage at Jim Porter's. The last time I had the pleasure of working with him, not only did he sing happy birthday to two of my good friends, at the end of the night the demand for an encore was so great(from a very small late friday crowd I might add), they began filling the Tip Jar of Love just to fill their hearts with a few more notes from his. Needless to say, Ron is in all of our hearts, and will be greatly missed.

To Rons family, Ron and I had tried to hook up several times last year, we almost did in Daytona. He left me a message on the phone. I was so glad to hear his voice. We were good buds and jammed a lot together years ago. I'm very saddened to hear about his death. God's peace to you all.

To the family and friends of Ron Harris:

Since hearing the news, I have had in my head a song Helen Reeves wrote about playing with Ron. The line is: "You don't notice the songs until they're not there..." With Ron, of course, you couldn't help but notice. He will be missed.

well this is harder than chinese algebra.

First I want to say how my deepest feelings go out to Shirley, Amanda & Ron.I have have met many people in my years, but very few could I consider my closest of friends. Ron was one of them.I've been thinkin a lot about him since I heard the news...and I can't help but remember him as an ultimate showman..a true entertainer.Ron loved all the good things in life. He loved great music..friends,food, and having a good time, and was able to multi-task by doing several at of those at the same time. But thats while the lights were on... My fondest memories are of when he was not on stage..when we were just having a good time, and hanging out..telling lies and swapping jokes..or fixing our broken down pieces of junk cars on the side of the road in the rain. We did a lot of all of them.Unfortunatley I won't be able to make it to the service tommorow...so in one way I won't have the closure some will..but on the other hand..I'll be able to think that the phone will ring and I'll hear him say.."Brother Bob!...Brother Ron...whats happinin man?"

I might not make it to the gig..but I'll slip in after the show and go backstage to hang out with the band ..just the way Ron would have.

Thanks Ron
