Dear Mrs. Barnes and family,
It's no question that Mr. Barnes was one of the kindest and most generous individuals that I have know in my life. Although I didn't work with him directly or know him as deeply as you and your family does, I must say that in the 6 great years I worked with 5/3 Bank he never forgot a name and a face. I remember his great smile, heartly laugh and strong handshake. He was truly a larger than life individual and will be missed by all who have known him.

We recently met Sam and Sue Barnes as they hosted a wonderful Westminster College alumni event in their home in June. They were extremely gracious to the "Road Crew" students, the alumni, and friends of the college. Our hearts go out to his family. The Westminster family has lost a warm and genuine friend and an alumnus who truly embodies the college's aim to educate "leaders of character".

Sue and family,
I and my colleagues at the American Cancer Society are immeasurably saddened by the loss of Sam. He was instrumental in buildng our Hope Lodge in Lexington, just one of his many projects. We are forever grateful that he passed through our lives and made them better. He not only left a legacy of making Lexington a better community but has made it a model for others.

From the moment they moved to Lexington, Sam and Sue Barnes dedicated themselves in a variety of important community causes. I was blessed to work along side Sam as chair of the United Way campaign in the mid 1990's. His energy and devotion to our community was a true inspiration to me and many others. One of the best ways we can honor his legacy is to get deeply involved in our community as he did so often. Thank you Sam for your devotion to our community.

I've known Sam Barnes for many years. I really got to know him when he stepped up with Bill Lear and led the business roundtable on Erasing Racism, a joint endeavor with the National Conference for Community and Justice and the Kentucky League of Cities.
My recent relationship had to do with the building of the Fifth Third Pavilion that now houses the Lexington Farmers Market on Saturdays. As a LFM vendor, this gift to the city has done more to build community than anything else.

Sam Barnes was a genuinely good and kind man. I worked in the bank building a few years ago and during the flood in Cynthiana he personally checked on my family while he was there helping with rescue and relief efforts. It was an unsolicited act of kindness and a good example of the Mr. Barnes' thoughfulness and caring. He was always very friendly and approachable with a warm, quiet smile. He was truly an asset to his community.
