Sara Headley Obituary

HEADLEY, Sara Elizabeth (Betty) Graham, retired thoroughbred breeder and widow of Duval Adams Headley, died Saturday at St. Joseph Hospital after a long illness. She was 88 years old. Mrs. Headley and her husband owned and operated Manchester Farm on Rice Road from 1947 to 1978. Among the horses they bred were: the 1951 two-year-old champion filly, Aunt Jinny; Pam's Ego, Dark Mirage, both three-year-old filly champions, and Tom Fool, named the Blood Horse Magazine's 11th Horse of the Century. Mrs. Headley was born in Evansville, Indiana, daughter of Nell Sefrit and Joseph Bolden Graham, president of the Graham Motor Company in the 20's and 30's. Mrs. Headley graduated from Fermata School in Aiken, South Carolina and attended the French School in New York City. She married Mr. Headley in 1937. She was an experienced gardener who took great pleasure raising roses; especially the pure white "John F. Kennedy" and the dual toned "Double Delight". She was a member of Pax Christi Roman Catholic Church, the Keeneland Club, the Thoroughbred Club and Idle Hour Country Club. She is survived by two daughters: Ms. Sally Headley (Stratford, Ontario), Ms. Louise Adams Headley (Lexington); three grandchildren: Ms. Sara Elizabeth Headley, (Chicago), Ms. Constance Headley Dick (Louisville) and Duval Adams Headley II (Lexington); two great-grandchildren, a brother and sister-in-law, Charles R. and Suzanne Graham (Miami Beach), numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral Mass will be celebrated at Pax Christi Church, Monday 1:00 p.m. W.R. Milward- Broadway in charge. Interment in Lexington Cemetery private. Contributions are suggested to St. Joseph's Hospital Foundation.www.milwardfuneral.com
