Tom SMITH Obituary

SMITH Tom Roger, of Venice, FL, husband of Emily Barron Smith, died Thu, June 2, 2011 in Lexington. He was a former Lexington resident and a retired Communications Engineer with KU, where he worked for 35 years. Following retirement, he founded and was Pres. of MELTCO Pool services for 10 years. Born in Phoenix, AZ, he was the son of the late Bryon McClelland and Juliet MayJean Turner Smith. He was a graduate of Columbia Military School and the UK School of Engineering. He was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity. He served in the U.S. Navy in WWII aboard the aircraft carrier Tarawa. He was a member of Christ Church Cathedral, where he had served on the Vestry, and an active member of St. Mark's Episcopal church in Venice; Past-President of Lexington Polo Club, Sertoma Club and Pyramid Club; former director of KY Society of Professional Engineers and ASHRAE; member Venice Golf and Country Club, UK Boone Center, Sertoma Club of Venice; life member UK Alumni Assn.; was a KY Colonel and had received the Bob Wilson award for service in IAEI. Besides his wife of 59 years, he is survived by a son, Pressley McClelland (Linda) Smith, Charlotte, NC; a daughter, Juliet Smith (Mark) Hardesty, Lexington; four grand-children, Robert Pressley (Caitlin) Smith and Andrew McClelland Smith, Charlotte, Elizabeth Blacketer and Katherine Hardesty, both Lexington; one great-grandson, Triston Mac-Callum Babb; a sister-in-law, Ann Barron Greis; a niece, Barrie Hart, both of Lexington; a nephew, Champe (Judy) Greis, Corbin; two great-nephews, and two God sons. He was preceded in death by a brother-in-law, Thomas Champe Greis. Pallbearers - Owen Lewis, Robert Lee Brown, Melvin Cobb, Thomas Crehore, Gene Getchell, Andrew Hart, J. William McCord, all of Lexington, Christopher and Mike Devoto, Knoxville, TN and Jamie Hart, Ft. Thomas, KY. Honorary pallbearers - Thomas Asbury, George Robertson, Charles Michler, Reuben Naylor, Dan Stewart, Claude W. Trapp, Dr. Robert Bishop, Venice FL, Charles McMeekin, Lima, OH, Wallace Horine, Louisville. Services 11am Tue at Christ Church Cathedral. Burial in the Lexington Cemetery will be private followed by a reception at the Cathedral. Visitation at Milward-Broadway Mon from 4-7pm. The family wants to thank everyone for their medical and spiritual support.
