Tommy Kron Obituary

Member of 'Rupp's Runts' dead at 64 By Jennifer Hewlett
KENTUCKY.COM

Tommy Kron, a guard on one of the University of Kentucky’s most famous men’s basketball teams — Rupp’s Runts — died of complications from cancer Thursday at his home in Louisville. He was 63.

When he was in elementary school, Mr. Kron wrote legendary UK basketball coach Adolph Rupp expressing interest in playing for the college basketball powerhouse. After Mr. Kron made the team years later, he found himself setting up plays so teammates Pat Riley and Louie Dampier, who became All-Americans, could score.

Mr. Kron helped lead the Wildcats to more than 20 consecutive wins and to the NCAA championship game during the year of Rupp’s Runts, 1965-66. Years later, he would see his 1965-66 team depicted in the movie Glory Road, about the championship game in which the all-white UK team lost to an all-black Texas Western team 72-65.

At 6-foot-5, Mr. Kron was not tall by UK men’s basketball standards, but no one in the 1965-66 UK starting lineup was any taller, and the team was nicknamed Rupp’s Runts.

“Tommy was probably one of our most under-rated people,” said Russell Rice, a former UK sports publicist and author of several books on UK sports history. “He played point guard, and he played great defense on the one-three-one (zone) when we first started it. Of course, his height helped him there.”

Mr. Kron and Larry Conley, Rice said, made big sacrifices when they concentrated on play-making and setting up teammates Riley and Dampier.

“That was a great sacrifice. They were seniors, and Riley and Dampier were juniors. It was something for seniors to make the sacrifice.”

Rice said that Mr. Kron played a big role in UK’s win over Duke in the 1963 Sugar Bowl. Mr. Kron guarded Duke star Jeff Mullins during the last part of the game, which UK won 81-79.

“Tommy was a sophomore. He shut out Jeff Mullins. I credit Tommy a lot with winning that championship.”

Mr. Kron, Rice said, “was fast, aggressive, could set up plays and he never quit.”

Mr. Kron averaged 12.3 points a game as a junior and 10.2 points a game as a senior.

The Owensboro native went to UK after graduating from Tell City High School in Indiana, where he lettered in basketball, football and track. He was a member of a Tell City state championship basketball team.

After leaving UK, he played for the St. Louis Hawks and the Seattle Supersonics in the NBA and the Kentucky Colonels in the ABA.

He was inducted into the Indiana Basketball Hall of Fame in 2001.

“I give him a lot of credit for being the complete team player and helping make the Rupp’s Runts what they were,” said former UK head coach Joe B. Hall, who was Rupp’s assistant coach during the 1965-66 year.

Mr. Kron, Hall said, was “a complete player, offensively and defensively, and was one of the better-liked players at the University of Kentucky.”

Mr. Kron, a business major at UK, was in the investment business after his basketball days. Most recently, he worked for PNC Bank.

He was diagnosed with bladder cancer just over a year ago.

“He remained extremely positive until the very end,” said his daughter, Jessica Kron Spears. “He had visitors from all around the country and the state coming by to say goodbye.”

In addition to his daughter, Mr. Kron is survived by his wife, Dianne Berger Kron; his mother, Mary Mason Kron; a son, Jason Alexander Kron; and four grandchildren.

Pearson Funeral Home on Breckenridge Lane in Louisville is handling arrangements.

I was very saddened to hear this. I grew up with Jessica and Jason in the neighborhood and at school. I remember Mr. Kron was a very kind man. He came to every single athletic event, and he was our biggest supporter. I held a compliment from him on the court or the field very, very highly. I think he was an honorary Amazon.

Jessica, Jason, and Diane, my thoughts are with you.

I met Tom in the 80's through Craig Tschudi and Steve Shea. He was a good investment professional, and a good man. We were not close, but he impressed me alot, and I was glad to have met him.

God bless your soul, Tom, and blessings to your family.

Tommy Kron was such a gentleman when I met him at the Atlanta UK Alumni Assoc. Derby Party back in 1985. He allowed me to go on and on about how much he and the other Rupp's Runts mean to me. I'm a Gator my education but will always be a Cat at heart.

Only got to know him from watching him from my student fan seat at games but he was a very special player on a very special team. Playing as the tallest starter at guard plus that Rupp's zone defense, to Rupp it was not a zone but some odd called man-to-man. So thankful for Tommy Kron committment to his Chritian faith which bring great glory to all.

Tommy was the epitome of what a basketball player and a person should be. He made everyone around him better both in sport and in life. What you brought to UK and the Kentucky family is beyond words. Thank you Tommy.

I first met Tommy as we stood in line at registration our freshman year and we became friends thru out our college years. Regretfully we lost our friendship as our lives took us on different paths, But I always looked forward to hearing about any of Tommy accomplishments and they always brought back fond memories.

A member of one of the most beloved Wildcat teams in history. While he didn't get the media hype that Dampier and Riley received, I am sure the "Rupp's Runts" would not have achieved the success that the team did without Tommy Kron.
One humerous moment sticks out in my mind of the memorable season. We were killing Georgia at Memorial Colliseum and Tommy Kron got a breakaway. Remember this was the year before the dunk was banned for a few years. He went up for a two-handed dunk and the ball flew out of his hands and up in to the crowd. Coach Rupp was so mad I thought he was going to have stroke. I don't think Tommy attepted anymore dunks that year.
My respects to the family and the memory of this great man and he will always be remembered as a great Kentucky Wildcat.

Tommy was one of my heroes when I was a high school student. To me he symbolized everything that was great about UK athletics. He always played to the best of his ability and was a consistent performer. There was the added attraction of being a clean cut, unassuming ambassador of goodwill for our University and the Commonwealth. He is now another UK basketball immortal. I extend my condolences and offer my prayers for Tommy's family.

God Bless the spirit of Tommy...and his family.
He meant so much to the people of Kentucy--we realized that he and Larry made the Runts what they became, a 'great team'.
Also, there are many people I have met over the past 40 plus years who speak with great admiration and excitement for what he brought to Kentucky basketball, both as a player and a person.
God Bless you and your family--I mourn his loss too.

A big reason the Runt's were such a great team was the sacrifices made by several players on that team. None more so than Tommy's. He sacrificed his scoring to become among other things a stalwart defensive player. We will miss you Tommy.

I first met Tommy at the 1961 American Legion's Boys Nation held at the Nation's Captial in Washington, D.C.. He was a Senator from Indiana, and I from Kentucky. In the fall of 1962,we both entered the University of Kentucky. We renewed our friendship;he lived in Hagin Hall A-1, and I in B-1. We visted with each other often; for a week, I joined the UK freshman basketball team at the conclusion of the first semester. Although,I never got to be an offical teammate of Tommy because he and I were the only two available players for the freshman team. All of the other, very good scholarship players had failed to make the required grade point standing at the conclusion of the '62 fall term. The freshman team's schedule had to be cancelled with only two potential players being available. We remained trusted friends throughout the remainder of our college experience. Alibi, after our freshman year,we did not get to spend the time with each other that we had because of the differences in our class schedules and what each was doing after classes.

Over the years, I have continued to have the opportunity to observe Tommy as he lived his life. My first impressions of him at Boys Nation and our Freshman year in college remained the same and continued to be reinforced. Tommy was a person who genuinely loved other people; he worked hard and would compensate for his limitations by improving his advantages; he was intense in his beliefs and loyalties, i.e. his not wanting to watch the movie Glory Road because he knew that he and his teammates were not racially biased simply because he loved his fellowman and was interested in everyone's well being; and Tommy always humbly greeted everyone with that beautiful, disarming, and loving smile. Tommy was an individual whose character and human qualities I pray that my children and grandchildren can develop and possess. I am sure that Jesus Christ raised him up into heaven and eternal life when his natural body failed him.

To Mary Mason Kron and the Kron Family

I am truly sorry to hear of Tom's passing. I was very fortunate to have met Tom several years ago and consider him a friend. I'll always remember the conversations that we shared at the restaurant. He was a great inpsiration to me with his faith in the Lord and his positive attitude, as we were both battling cancer. He was a very caring person and will be missed by all that knew him.

December 3, 2007

First my sympathy to the Kron family. What an inspiration to read of Tommy's committment to his Chritian faith.
As a senior at Murray State during the '66 season my fraternity brothers and I would follow Caywood and the Cats every game on the radio. As I recall, there weren't many games on TV until the NCAA Championship came around, so we followed the bounce of the ball which often began with a sharp Kron pass to Riley or Dampier. I can destinctly remember standing in the family living room during the holidays with my dad and listening to the Cats playing down at Vandy, and Caywood talking about the Cats making five straight trips down the floor with no dribbling, just Kron's pinpoint passing to get others their shot.
While tough to lose two UK greats the same day, I must say losing Tommy Kron, one from my generation, was a shock that truly saddens me. I'm thankful for the memories that flood me and take me back to that great era at UK with Tommy, Larry, Thad, Pat and Louie.
What a fine gentleman all Kentuckians can be proud of.

Tommy Kron was a great player that I remember well. He helped make the "runts" a very special team. His "team" style of play always impressed me as a young player myself. I am saddened by his passing, and wish to extend my condolences to his family. As I am sure you all already know, He was loved by many, and will be remembered by many as well. I was a 20 year old Die Hard UK Fan in the Good Sam Hospital during the NCAA Finals in 1966 having gone through a lot of surgery and the only real joy in my life then was watching and following "Rupp's Runts" somehow I have never liked that name,, to me that Gang of five, along with Coach Rupp and Coach Lancaster Conley, Knon, Dampier, Riley and Lexingtons own Thad Jaraz, were and will always be GIANTS, Oh how UK Fans long for those days of Nothing but First Class Players, with True Team Spirit and Dignity. UK fans will hurt and cry real tears for one of the best. I was so glad to read here that Tommy was a Christian,, for in the end that is really all that counts,, my deepest heartfelt regards to Tommy's family

I first met Tommy in 1962 when he played for Owensboro's American Legion baseball team. My brother Frankie was on the team & I was the batboy. That team won the state championship that summer & advanced to the regional. Tommy was 6'5" & everyone else was 5'9" or smaller. What a sight! Tommy was always a winner. Needless to say he was one of my favorite Wildcats of all time. God rest his soul.

Dear Dianne and family,

I was so sorry to hear of Tom's death, sorry and surprised. Dianne, as you know, all of us living at the sorority house with you followed your courtship with Tom and know how much you've loved him from the very beginning.

I respected Tom as the legendary part of the fabulous basketball team of our college years, but more than that, I respected him as a man who always brought a positive sense into every environment in which he lived and worked. Seeing the picture included with this article exemplifies the Tom I knew and remember--a handsome man with a warm smile and a twinkle in his eye.

I cannot imagine how you and your family must be grieving, but please know that you are with me in my thoughts and prayers today and after.

Tom lives on in the memories of those who knew him and through all who loved and admired him.

My concolences to you,
Karen Pugh Esham

Tommy was a "guy's guy" in every sense of the word...Always fun to be around...A great guy to work with, play with or just shoot the breeze with...

In the last year of his life, it was amazing to watch his spiritual development as he faced the physical battle with cancer...It was nothing short of inspirational...As his physical strength faded, it was replaced by a spiritual faith that was even stronger...He remained strong to the end...No surprise, really, given the remarkable man that he was...

His last request of me, and of many others as well, was to make sure that if people asked about him, that they be told of the life-changing impact that salvation in Christ had on him...

In the way he lived and in the way he died, he was a man of tremendous dignity and class...A man worthy of emulation...A true winner...

I will miss my friend, but I am inspired by his faith and look forward to seeing him again someday...I am sure he will have some great new stories to tell...

To Dianne, Jessica and Jason...I know that you know this, but he sure was proud of you all and grateful for each of you in a way that was very moving...

My thoughts and prayers will be with you and your family...

I am sad to hear of Tommy's passing. I'll never forget him playing on that Runt's team in 1965-66. I lived in Owensboro, was 13 years old and that was the first time I had ever watched or listened to College BB. What a team to watch ! And Kron ran it so beautifully ! I became a die hard UK fan from then on, and was heartbroken when the Runt's lost in the championship game. A friend and I would shoot hoops after the UK games in his backyard, He would pretend to be Louie Dampier, and I pretended to be Tommy Kron, the man getting the ball to his teammates. We'll miss you Tommy, and I'll never forget you running that break and passing in the open court. What a sight to behold ! Rest in Peace.

As a 14 year old it was Rupp's Runts that solidified my allegience forever to UK basketball. Even then we all knew it was the leadership and unselfish play of Tommy Kron (and Larry Conley) that made the team what it was. From all accounts it appears he went on to become even a better person than player. If God is using the 1-3-1 then Tommy is surely at the point.

My heartfelt condolences to the
family of the "Glue" of the Runts.
We were priveleged to have Tommy
be a large part of the Wildcat
family. God's team will gladly
welcome him. Go in Peace, Tommy.

May God bless you and your family in this time of sorrow. I attended school at UK with Tommy. I always held him in the highest esteem and what a grest athelete he was. May GOD bless.

Rupp's Runts was the first real team I paid attention to as a kid in Russell, Ky. I became, and still am, a huge Wildcat fan. During my years in Northern Kentucky, I was a member of the Alumni Assoc. board of N.K. We held charity golf tournaments to raise money for scholarships and I had the pleasure of meeting Tom. We became friends, and he was a wonderful gentleman. He will be missed.
