Wayne Smith Obituary

SMITH Wayne B. entered into the joys of heaven on June 29th, 2016, at Sayre Christian Village. He joined his wife of 63 years Marjorie Lucille Judy (Nov 23, 2014) having fought the good fight, finished the course and kept the faith. There aren't enough adequate words to describe the depth and breadth of the man who was born on January 21, 1929 in Pennsylvania but grew up in Cincinnati, OH. A 1952 graduate of Cincinnati Christian University, he began his ministry in Cynthiana KY pastoring Robinson Christian Church, Stringtown Christian Church and Unity Christian Church before coming to Lexington, KY in 1956. Born of a call from Broadway Christian Church, Smith founded Southland Christian Church where the Chapel bears his name and where he preached for 40 years with the courage of conviction out of a burning desire to love people. With a bucket of fried chicken and his infectious laugh, he represented Jesus through his years of faithful service. His generosity was limitless giving of his time, talents and resources to anyone in need. While he officially retired in 1996, he continued to speak from coast to coast for banquets, revivals, conventions, business gatherings and churches until the day he died. Known as the "Bob Hope of the Ministry", he used humor to convey the love of Christ believing laughter was medicine for the soul. He was the preacher's preacher and he devotedly served the institutions that encouraged and discipled them. He was president of the North American Christian Convention in 1977 which named him one of "God's Honored Servants" in 1996. The "Wayne B. Smith Oratorium" at the CCU chapel is named in his honor where he served as trustee for 25 years as is the "Wayne B. Smith Center for Christian Leadership" at Kentucky Christian College where he received "The Lusby Award" in 1996. He received honorary doctorates from Louisville Bible College (1970), Kentucky Christian College (1975) and Kerala Christian Bible College in India (1989). He was instrumental in the establishment of Christian Student Fellowship at UK, Southern Acres Christian Church, Hill N Dale Christian Church and Eastside Christian Church. He was not shrouded in mediocrity or mystery for we know what he believed and where he stood because his convictions and his life were transparent. He believed the church was to be the conscience of the community so he took public stances and developed intentional relationships with leaders. Assurance for Life and Right to Life honored him in 2009 with the "Power of One" award for his stand protecting life, the Salvation Army honored his community service in 2009 and the Lighthouse Ministry named their new dining facility in 2016 for he and Marge in recognition of his belief that church isn't a museum for the saints but it's a hospital for the hurting. His footprints have been felt and will be seen in places in the days to come for you cannot put footprints or influence in a grave. His legacy will continue through daughters Judy (Kenny) Speaks and Jana (Tim) Thore, grandchildren Lyndsey (Jason) Brinegar, Amanda, Barron, Landon (Michelle) and Austin, greatgrandchildren Dylyn, Gabriella, Braxton and Jackson. He finished his race with a smile on his face, joy in his heart and laughter in his soul and we are all better to have known him. A celebration funeral service will be held July 6 at 1pm at Southland Christian Church's main worship auditorium at 5001 Harrodsburg Road in Jessamine County. Visitation will be held 1-9pm on July 5 and from 10am-12:45pm on July 6 before the funeral. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions are suggested to Assurance, 1517 Nicholasville Rd., Lexington, KY 40503, Bluegrass Christian Camp, 7463 Athens Boonesboro Rd., Lexington, KY 40509 or Sayre Christian Village, 3775 Belleau Wood Drive, Lexington, KY 40517. Kerr Brothers on Harrodsburg Road is handling the arrangements.

I love you and I miss you. Thanks for helping this poor kid from the projects. You were my biggest cheerleader and supporter. When I went to Louisville Bible College you gave me your library, and bought me my first car, my selfish heart aches because I miss you, but I know you are with our Father. Forgive me Lord, because I still hurt, and I miss Mr. Wayne's burly laughter, land his genuine love for mankind. God when you made Mr. Smith, you created for us a legacy that goes beyond time, and I thank you for allowing him to be in my life. Love you.

Wayne was such a special man of God. My parents and I attended Southland years ago when he was there and he always made us laugh as he always telling a funny story as well as delivering a great sermon! Heaven has gained a wonderful man.

Wayne and I were classmates in college and were lifelong friends. We graduated in the same year from the Cincinnati Bible Seminary. He was a very special man with a tremendous heart for the Lord's work. He never missed an opportunity to make you feel good or share a joke with you. He was always sending gifts and remembrances on birthdays, anniversaries, or just for no real reason. His love for people was immeasurable and he will be missed, but he is no doubt chatting with Marge about his newest ideas. We were blessed to have him as our friend.

He was a wonderful and spiritual person. I worked at the waffle House in Beaumont Centre where he came in all the time. He always had a great smile and positive attitude he would bring into the restaurant. Sorry for the loss of a wonder man and now an angel.

We are sad to learn that this world has lost this super saint, but rejoice in his glorious homecoming in Glory. We know that he will be near the front of the line to greet us as we cross the river ourselves just as he played such an important role in our lives though we were in his church just two years. But those two years 50 years ago were the first two of our married life, and the love of people and Jesus and the faith in God and His Word Wayne set forth as examples for us have impacted our lives and those of our children and their families ever since. Wayne gave us far more than an occasional Sunday lunch, though that was a real treat for a struggling graduate student and his wife. Wayne and Southland Church helped us to anchor our lives in the Lord Jesus and that anchor still holds.

So very sorry to hear of Wayne's passing, he was a very Christian man with a lot of humor to go with that. He will be missed by a lot of people everywhere. You'll be in our prayers but I know he is in a better place now, no more sickness and heartache.

Thinking of you,

My deepest sympathy to all of Wayne's family...I would love to have attended but living in the Carolinas and a fractured patella prevents me so. But of memory. 1956 early in his ministry. My dad went to church at Southland and my mom met Wayne when he held a revival at Ruckerville Christian Church. He knew my family. Wayne married my parents in 1956 and they continued at Southland. Though they moved to Harrodsburg we visited Southland continously. When I officially joined Southland, Wayne would joke to the audience that he married my parents and they were together and baptized my great uncle back during that revival. The relative was bedridden and as they carried him to the pond Wayne joked they all almost drowned. Being at Southland changed my life with Wayne. I come to love church again and Wayne ministered to my heart and self the real love of Jesus. What precious memories, laughs and joy he gave. Memories treasured.

MY wife was in labor about all nite Wayne stayed with me .With his help and prayers both my wife qnd daughter survived. that was 54 years ago.We traveled a lot of miles together and served in the lions club Blue Grass Christian Camp Searching for land to start a church .Especially Southern Acres We had to jump a lot of hurdles to get this done and with his perservence and phone call and pushing me we got it done.He was the kind of guy when he asked you to do something you could not say no. Like delivering Christmas baskets I could go on and on I will miss him hope to see him again some day My friend of approx 55 years will be missed.

I recall one snowy evening someone knocked on our door and it was Rev. Smith. He had received some of our mail by mistake (as my former husband's name was also Wayne Smith)and had driven all the way out to Delaney Ferry Road to bring it to us. He used this little chore to show the love that God puts into people's hearts and as a reason to share God's word and love with us. I will remember his laugh and the twinkle in his eye. He was a good and faithful servant if there ever was one.

Wayne Smith I will always love you. You bought me my first car when I was in Bible College. When I was down I could always call you. I remember I was about to drop out of Bible College because the cost was too much for me and my family. You raised $6,000 for me. You showed me through your generosity the love of God. I can go on and on about all the things you've done for me. I remember when I arrived back on campus after visiting you with the portrait you gave me. I hung it up in my room as a reminder of the love we ought to have for one another. If it was not your God working through you I don't know where this lil black kid from the projects would have ended up. To you sir I say thank. To God I say I'm grateful that you allowed Wayne B. Smith to be apart of my life. I love you and will miss you.

I will always remember his infectious laugh and his smile was so contagious. I attended Southland as a Teenager and was Baptized because he was such an Inspiration at that time. When we moved to Virginia, I missed attending, but would always make it back when visiting. He will be truly missed by many. Prayers to Judy and Jana and their Families. Angela Wagner Blythe

Wayne had performed my wedding in 1974,later we left Lexington in 1990, but not before checking with Wayne for a referral from him in Jacksonville, Fl. He was so happy to learn that I transferred membership to one of his buddies (Dennis Bratton) at then Mandarin Christian Church. One of Wayne's sayings at the end of a fired up sermon was "If that don't light your fire, then your wood is wet" !! It was then adopted by my new minister to be carried forth. I hope they have KFC up there for him. I'm so blessed to have been part of his flock.

For about 20 years I was one of his flock and sat and soaked it all in. Right before Wayne retired, I started attending and joined Southern Acres Christian Church (a sister church of SCC). Years passed and as God would have it, I worked for Wayne part-time. It was there a deeper love and friendship was developed, as I was able to sit and talk with him. (He was much too busy while pastoring at SCC when I was a member there). I am so glad I had the opportunity to go "deeper" with him in his last decade of life. I love the Smith Family, always have; always will. Peace and Joy to all of you.

His compassion and love for others had no borders. He came to our small town in Indiana more than once as a speaker, and we came to love him as a friend. When we were going through a hard place, my husband didn't hesitate to call Brother Wayne for counsel....he gave us the wisdom and comfort we needed. We knew God was working through him. No surprises there! So we are thanking God for this man and his legacy, and asking God to grant comfort and great peace to his family.

I am not sure there are words to describe the incredible loss I feel right now. Yet at the same time the imagery of the reunions taking place. I see Wayne there with Palmer Young. My dad, Ralph Byers is there. Earl Swank, Don Frye. Why there is Don Nash. They just keep coming. Omer Hamlin. Otis Platt. It is like a preachers meeting in heaven. There are many others. More than I can count. But wait, something is happening. They are all turning and getting on their knees. OK, I can see now. Jesus is coming. Now he is lifting them all up and hugging them and thanking them for their service. Now I see Jesus allowing them to see the multitude of lives that have been impacted by their work. Well done, good and faithful servants. Enter in.

One day my doorbell rang and when I opened the door there was a UPS truck driving away and there was a package by my door. I opened the package and there was a throw with the words of Amazing Grace woven into it and a letter from Wayne Smith expressing his love for my husband who had recently gone to be with the Lord.
Now Wayne is worshiping at the feet of Jesus with John and I can hear them praising Him for His amazing grace.

Another friend whose life was so well lived.
I thank God for his touch on our lives.

My Father raised me in Wayne Smith's church and went on to become a preacher himself. I still remember the good times in youth group at the Hill-n-Dale church and even got an autograph from Dan Islle KY basketball player, when he came to talk to our youth group. Wayne was so kind and funny, and always said I had a great smile. I was really young in those days but I remember him well. I know he is with our Father in heaven and so will I meet him again there. I can't wait!!! Memories are grand but Heaven is grander. My condolences to Wayne's family as I know he will surely be missed, as he will for all that knew him.
