Iris Fung Obituary

Iris Fung, 60, passed away unexpectedly in Rochester, MN, in June of 2025. Iris is survived by her long-time partner Scott Hansen and her sister, Irene. Iris was born in Hong Kong. She came to the United States as a college student and graduated from Texas A&M University with a degree in Biochemistry. Iris had an insatiable thirst for knowledge and continuous learning. She later obtained several advanced degrees in different disciplines from University of Wisconsin-Madison, Iowa State University and University of Florida. She obtained a Doctor of Pharmacy from Creighton University in 2018. Iris worked in financial services and actuary before starting her career in Pharmacy in 2013. She worked as a pharmacy technician while working her way through Pharmacy school. After becoming a licensed Pharmacist in 2018, she worked in a variety of settings in 9 different states and helped many with her loving heart. Iris was known for her excellent memory and span of knowledge over a wide range of topics. Iris was fascinating to converse with, possessing an inquisitive mind and a love for exploring unconventional perspectives. Iris was a devout Catholic and attended St. Cecilia Catholic Church when in Ames. She lived a life of meaningful acts of love and service. She had a caring heart for everyone. Iris was notoriously frugal with herself and graciously generous with others. She would go to great lengths to find thoughtful gifts for family and friends for holidays and special occasions. Iris absolutely adored cats. She would regularly visit pet stores and businesses with a cat. When she travelled for work, she often rented rooms from houses with a cat. She even behaved like a cat in some ways. A service was held for family and close friends at Macken Funeral Home of Rochester, MN on June 11. She will be buried on July 18 in the same cemetery as her parents, Gate of Heaven cemetery in California. A prayer service for Iris will be held in the chapel at St. Cecilia Catholic Church in Ames, Iowa at 3 pm on Wednesday, July 16. In lieu of flowers and memorial gifts, please make a donation to Ames Animal Shelter.

Iris was a remarkable soul whose generosity, intellect, and quiet strength touched countless lives. I first met her as a freshman at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and even then, her warmth and brilliance stood out. I will always remember my time there with the group of Hong Kong students-including Iris-whose friendship made those years unforgettable. When my mother passed away, Iris was there-offering comfort in a way I´ll never forget. She lived with purpose, served with grace, and inspired others through both words and example. Her memory continues to amaze me and remains a quiet light for all who had the privilege of knowing her.
