Patrick O’Connor Obituary

Patrick (Pat) John O'Connor June 5, 1950 – May 23, 2025 Patrick (Pat) John O'Connor, a celebrated boxer and cherished brother and friend, passed away on May 23, 2025, at the age of 74. Born in Rochester, Minnesota, on June 5, 1950, Pat was the beloved son of John (Jack) O'Connor and Valetta Gerber O'Connor. He graduated from Mayo High School in 1968 and from an early age displayed the fierce determination and competitive spirit that would define his life. In 2013, Pat was honored with induction into the Minnesota Boxing Hall of Fame-a fitting tribute to his contributions and legacy in the sport. He also gave back to the community he loved, offering guidance and support at the 4th Street Boxing Gym. Beyond the ring, Pat was previously married to Barbara Brandenburg, with whom he shared a son, Joshua. He later married Diane Owen, who preceded him in death in 2022. Pat's final years were marked by his courageous battle with Parkinson's disease and dementia, challenges he faced with the same grit he brought to the ring. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Valetta O'Connor, and his wife, Diane. He is survived by his son Joshua (Lisa) O'Connor; grandchildren Grant and Sarah O'Connor; brother Dan (Deb) O'Connor; nephew Shaun (Jenny) O'Connor; niece Kristen Stellmaker; and grand-nephews and niece, Logan, Sam, Jack, Max, Ben, and Gracelyn. Pat will be remembered for his powerful punch and accolades in the boxing world. He fought every round of life with strength and heart, and his legacy will live on through those who knew and loved him. Memorials are suggested to Raphael's gym, One Punch Boxing, 125 Elton Hills Dr NW, Rochester, MN 55901

Pat fought amateur, during a time when all fighters would show up to the fight cards wearing dress-clothes, including white shirt and tie. And Pat as good a fighter as he was, was usually featured in the main event! From Chatfield back then, my brother Jim and I fought on some of the same 1967-1969 Golden Gloves amateur fight cards, with Pat and Pat's brother Dan. One jight when neither of us had an opponent, I was asked to fight in a 3-round exhibition-match, with Pat. (What an honor.) Pat had the fastest hands slickest footwork. But most of all, I remember Pat as one extremely amazing fighter to watch, slick, and a winner, but one who conducted himself in a way that everyone, including all of us other fighters, respected Pat, everyone. R.I.P. PAT.

Went to HS with Pat. Used to go watch him spar at Silver Lake Fire Station. Did some hunting with his dad and brother. Sad to see this news.

When I was young and started boxing at 4th Street Gym Pat was always around helping coach us. He once put the head gear and gloves on and let me hit him. Thankfully he didn't hit me back

Hard to comprehend the enormous talent that Pat had. Even harder to put the story of The Biggest Event in the history of this city. Mind bending is the way I remember ...Pat O´Conner vs Duane Horseman ...early 1970s ... So much excitement and anticipation ...shout out to my dad Roy "Smokey" Adams for taking me along for the ride...he was so proud to be part of the enterouroge!

Condolence to the entire O'Conner family. I met Pat at the gym while I was involved in PAL. He would talk to the kids and even spar a little with them. He was one of Rochester's unsung sports treasures. RIP Pat
