Susan Ramthun Obituary

Susan Maria Ramthun – Rochester, MN Susan Maria (nee Lofstrom) Ramthun peacefully slipped into Jesus' arms on Friday, September 19, 2025, surrounded by many family members in Rochester, MN. She was 93 years old. Susan was born to Samuel Andrew Lofstrom and Dorothy Maria (nee Barker) Lofstrom on July 16, 1932 in Mora, MN. Susan spent her growing up years in Cambridge, MN with the exception of one year spent in Newfoundland with her family at the Ernest Emery Harmon U.S. Air Force Base. After graduating from Cambridge High School in 1950, she attended Gustavus Adolphus College in St. Peter, MN and then transferred to St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Rochester, MN where she received her nursing diploma in 1954. In September 1954, Susan married Donald Albert Ramthun Jr. and from this union came four children. During her nursing career, she worked in surgery at St. Mary's and Olmsted Community Hospitals in Rochester, MN. She taught nursing students through the Rochester Vocational School in Rochester, MN. (her daughter, Anna, was one of her students) Desiring warmer weather, Susan moved to Naples, FL where she finished her nursing career working in the Public Health Department at Collier County. Working with different ethnicities was the highlight of her career. Music was important to Susan. God gave her the gift of perfect pitch. She learned to play the piano and flute plus sang in the choir during her school years. As an adult, she sang in many church choirs, Sweet Adelines, The Kitchen Band, a community choir in Naples and Resounding Voices. She also played organ for churches and played flute in the Naples Community Band. She will be remembered for her love of family, sweet smiles, her caring touch and gentle faith. She will be missed by many. Susan is survived by her children, Anna (Mark) Redfern of Kasson, MN, Dee (Solveig) Ramthun of Oslo, Norway, Jill (Jim) Weirick of Rochester, MN and Jon (Adelle Vanhorn) Ramthun of Naples, FL; sixteen grandchildren, twelve great-grandchildren and sister Dodee (Charles) Colberg; plus many loved in-laws, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, two brother-in-laws and two sister-in-laws. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, November 8th, 2025 at 11:00 a.m. at Rochester Covenant Church in Rochester, MN. Burial will be at Grandview Memorial Gardens in Rochester, MN.
