Douglas Hinds Obituary

Douglas Lanford Hinds, 91, widower of Lynette Balliew Hinds, passed away on May 2, 2025, at Georgetown Tidelands Hospital. Mr. Hinds was born in Kingstree, SC on May 25, 1933, a son of the late Joseph James Hinds and Lillian Lyda Hinds. He was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Georgetown, where he was a Deacon and a member of the Dr. Lide Williams Sunday School Class. He was an avid hunter and outdoorsman, but his greatest love was for his wife, children, and grandchildren. Surviving are; a son, Scott Hinds (Frankie) of Johnston, SC; two daughters, Allyson Cruise of Georgetown and Tootie Willhelm (Rob) of Fairhope, AL; five grandchildren, Lanford Wrenn (Brandy), Blair Willhelm, Stephen Wrenn, Wofford Willhelm (Tabatha) and Savannah Hinds, four great-grandchildren, Colin, Kayla, Cantley and Kennedy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Hinds was predeceased by: two brothers, Joe Hinds and Charles Hinds; mother and father-in-law, Mable and Doyle Balliew; a son-in-law, David Cruise. Mr. Hinds practiced Law and was a partner at Hinds, Cowan, Strange & Geer until his retirement. Mr. Hinds received his undergraduate degree from Furman University and his law degree from the University of South Carolina. He was an active participant in the state and city government where he served as Mayor of Georgetown and as a member of the South Carolina State Senate. Among his many accomplishments, being on the board of directors of the SC Municipal Association; Representative of Municipalities of South Carolina; Water Resources Commission; Saltwater Interest; Board of Directors of Waccamaw Regional Planning and Development Council, where he was chairman from 1983-1985. He was on the ethics committee while serving in the Senate representing South Carolina. A special Thank you to Michael Carter for being such a loyal friend and to Dr. Benjamin Greenwood for his compassionate care. Funeral Services will be at 2:00 pm on Wednesday, May 7, 2025, at First Baptist Church of Georgetown. Officiating will be the Rev. Dr. Ted Sherrill and Rev. Keith Wall. The family will receive friends one hour before the service in the church parlor from 1:00 pm until 2:00 pm. Please sign a guestbook at: www.mayerfuneralhome.com.
