Edward DuBose Obituary
Pawleys Island
Dr. Edward Benton DuBose, a resident of Debordieu Colony, died February 12, 2025, with his wife of 60 years by his side.
Known as Benny by his friends and family, he was born in Columbia, SC on May 28, 1940, and was the 3rd of 5 children of Carl Butler and Minnie Reynolds DuBose. After graduating from Dreher High School in 1958, he served as a corpsman in the US Navy stationed in Pensacola, FL. He returned to Columbia where he graduated from the University of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Management. While at USC, he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity. It was there that Benny met and married another USC graduate, Lynn Fishburne.
In 1966, he was accepted into the School of Dentistry at the University of Louisville (KY) and in 1970, he was awarded the degree of Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) with honors. While in dental school, Benny established himself as a leader in the Class of 1970. He was a mentor to many of his classmates as his advice was frequently coveted. At the same time, his unique sense of humor gave welcome relief and diversion from the stress and rigor of dental school to his colleagues. Benny had the wonderful gift of making others laugh. Upon graduation from the School of Dentistry, Benny entered practice in Newberry, SC, where he was an associate of Dr. Jim Wiseman. He, his wife and two sons spent 27 happy years there where they made many lasting friendships.
In 1997, he relocated to Pawleys Island, SC where he had owned a second home for many years. There, he opened a dental practice and was able to enjoy many activities that he loved, including fishing, golf and tennis. For many years, Dr. DuBose felt there was a genuine need for a free dental clinic in Georgetown County. In 2013, he was able to make that dream come true when Helping Hands of Georgetown agreed to sponsor and help fund the clinic, which was recently named the "Dr. Edward Benton DuBose Dental Clinic at Helping Hands". Benny was given the ultimate honor during his lifetime of being known as "the dentist's dentist". This recognition was not just symbolic. During his 47 years of practice, many of his fellow dentists requested that he treat and restore their own teeth and even those of their families; There is no greater compliment to a doctor.
In addition to his wife, Benny is survived by his two sons, Steven Martin DuBose, PhD of Fort Worth, TX, and Brett Benton DuBose (Jennifer) of Greenwood, SC, four grandchildren, Mary Clare & Alice of Forth Worth, TX and Ellie & Jenna of Greenwood, SC, and brothers Carl "Buddy" (Mary Anne) and Francis (Judy), both of Columbia, SC, and David (Jennie) of Newberry, SC and many nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister, Patricia DuBose Logothetis.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Monday, February 17, 2025, at The Abbey at Pawleys Island, with a reception following the ceremony.
A special thanks goes out to Anchie Sanders, Carolyn Williams, and Tidelands Hospice, and all of those who assisted Benny in his final days.
